So Can You

Run for your life!
It isn't hard
At 44 I could run
A panting hun
dred metres
Two months later,
(two months' fleeter)
Five hundred I go
If I can do
this so
can you.

Lift those weights!
In October I struggled with
1.5 kg in each hand
I could raise them thrice above my head
"This is so difficult," I said.
In December, I'm heaving thrice as much
Ten times up
If I should judge
I'm so much stronger than before.

How long does it take,
All this training?
Is it time-consuming? Draining?
Six times a week
Seven minutes a day
How could there be
an easier way
And hey!
If I can do
it so
can you.

I'll never be
Mrs Universe
I'm middle aged
Strong? The reverse!
I'm slightly built
Unathletic
Two months ago it was thirty years
(Soooo pathetic)
since I could do a pushup.
My arms so weak
They couldn't support
My torso.
Also -
I suffer tendonitis
(Legacy of thirty years of typing)
And yet
In December I managed two
Pushups I mean
That seemed plenty
Three weeks later, I can do twenty!
And so I say
Hey!
If I can do
it so can you - and you - and you!

So here is my challenge.
Work with me -
Do a little run each day
Lift tins of soup above your head
Stretch a little - catch my thread?
Within three weeks you will be stronger
Able to keep on running longer
Fitter and happier in yourself
It's true .
If I can do
it so can you.

And I should do it! You have set quite an example for others. It isn't so hard once
you start is it. Bill Murray

:) Thank you for this stirring kick in the butt, Sally! Wow, you look great!! I may just start out walking, though, I get those annoying ankle-twists when I run, need to strengten those weak old (mine are 43!) muscles! January 1st is the day me and my kids start walking! Happy New Year to you and keep it up!
