I have visited many homeless in the prisons around our town and some I come to know
Many talk about getting back on their feet but some really have no place to go
These ex-military service members, job seeking folks might be on the street, but they are much like you and me
They may be homeless, but some are heroic Veterans and many have fought for the U.S. overseas
I have attended church with the homeless in town
They just want love and kindness; they are thankful when friendly folks come around
They may be homeless, but they are not hopeless as each one has a personal story to tell
They may be homeless, but they still have faith and they served our county well
They may be homeless but most are not helpless in any sort of way
So take time out, give them a hand, they deserve that much today!

It might help to talk to homeless people and find out more about them before we just stick our hand out with money to someone who comes up to the car at an intersection. Besides, like you wrote in your poem, just talking to them gives them encouragement and may help them find a home and work. They do have stories to tell.
