New elections, new President, new promises, new new new, NEW?
I thought that Nam was the bastard son of a few politicians, but then, we got twice Iraq.
We thought that the Nam Veterans were unique, a castaways from a unpopular war that the same politicians wanted to disassociate with by offering the Veterans as a sacrificial offers.
But, now Iraq?, twice? and the new Veterans being the castaways of another unpopular war?
America, please, wake up, don't sleep through the nightmare!

Poem Artwork

Enter the cement jungle where all is lost,
gentle shadows tiptoeing after the sun dead,
perhaps afraid to be seen and to be mugged,
by the same thugs that the sun had beheaded
leaving the horizon bleeding in crimson hues,
dying, outside a city that doesn’t care.

Meander unknown streets, like going nowhere,
because that’s the direction of homelessness,
cold will push, perhaps with unneeded hurry
to go in searching of a street without a name,
for a home that never was there, or it was,
now it has been washed away by the years.

All possession in one squeaking shopping cart,
rags for clothes, leaking shoes, wearing old dirt,
moving, always moving, through a blind world
holding is very open seeing eyes from them avert,
from the ones pushing a rusting shopping cart
on a full of people the most empty of all deserts.

Pushing one’s life contents in bit and pieces
among retrieved bits and pieces discarded
from other lives, holding to too many little things
that no matter how much one wish can’t be taken,
as the last pair of our shoes give up their soul
when our walking through those streets end.

Veteran on a wheelchair, shopping cart soldier,
your country forgot the promises that were given,
and now someone tired is pushing you like
those bit and pieces of homelessness unwanted
by the ones that where so proud of your will
to answer the call of the Hymn of a Nation’s battle.

Enter the cement jungle where all is lost among
so many souls going by everyday without a care,
summer will give you the grass of the parks and
in winter the blessed warmth of a subway vent,
doesn’t matter if you are pushing a shopping cart,
or are an Honorable Veteran in a wheelchair.

This Country has always forsaken its vets
They promise them the world and Give the hell
Vets have to wait for weeks and months to see doctors
or seek appointments, only to be abused and harassed,
when they arrive at the hospital, by Clerks that don't know
what these vets been through, asking them if they had called
Priored to arriving there to verify their appoitments.
Forgive me..... just ranting out my anger, as fellow vets friends
complain to me, that don't have other alternatives, I am a vet
And I have always refused to use their medical services
Because I consider myself lucky that I always had other medical
insurance.....
Peace Brother

Yes Georg, you speak of so many tragic truths. Many have been brushed aside or forgotten, promises made but never kept. A very sad reality that so many are forced to live, exist with. A very shameful chapter in the history of this once fine land....

Be always safe,
Karen

Sad, sad, sad. Promises made and not kept. I have watched this and written to legislators who ask what can they do? Well, for one fullfill promises. Soldiers who re-enlist for a bonus that never comes. Soldiers that died because of a lack of armour. Rotten planning and incompetence have killed American soldiers in Iraq and here at home. A true travesty of what the average person wants for these honorable men. Excellent Liz

Georg - Sad and tragic poem. I keep thinking how Vietnam was put forth as a necessary war. We didn't win that war, yet our country went on, and now we're trading with Vietnam as if there had never been a war or thousands of lives wasted, both American and Vietnamese. The soldiers did their duty; the politicians did not. - David

A most gut-searing tragedy in your poem, Georg. Rather than telling our Vets and Fighting Forces THANK YOU, now WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU, our government puts them in hospitals to mend their wounds or replace their limbs then shuffles our men/women off on their own; nor are the deeper, inner wounds cared for. If there exists a conscience, it is not within our Executive branch...

...in sadness...the truth you pen so well...reminds one of the well oiled forgetfulness...of those who might never hear the squeak of a shopping cart so in need.
thank you to our veterans and your powerful poetry Georg.

The only country that a Veteran lives below poverty level is USA.

Who were they serving when they were in active service?

It is time to learn what The Game Masters (TWO) are doing to our people.

A historic magnificent poem delivered to the archive of eternity.

In admiration,

No matter which war, no matter how unpopular or popular (if that's even possible)it might be, my support will always be for the troops. Active or discarged, wounded or healthy, specops or part time guard, I don't care. A person who is so selfless and so full of patriotism and love for their country, to sacrify their own life is my hero.
I'm proud of my friends; a captain in the USMC with two trips to Iraq, a 20 year old lady friend in the Army, who is right now on her first journey away from home, another friend in the Army getting his education to be specops. My hat's up to all and my deepest worries go to the government who doesn't take care of their own.

With gratitude,
Becca~

The next war that is coming the dead and wounded won't be in the thousands but in the millions and the veterans of that war will be civilians.

Your words speak of a very sad truth, how quick they forget, what would they do without hose Heros. Thank you Georg, I sure wish they would open their eyes and look around then hold up to all the broken promises.

Thank you , Newfie Hugs, Rose

Unbelievably, Iraq may prove to be even worse than Vietnam. There is no end in sight, and there are already thousands of walking wounded, unable to find employment, and already showing up in homeless shelters across the land.

And even worse, most of our so called 'leaders' today are not vets themselves, so they care little for their plight.

History teaches, but we never learn.

"Thank you for your service, now, Go Away" is what they seem to be saying - actually, just, "Go Away" seems to be more apt - darn shame. There ought to be a law - heartbreaking!! As the daughter of/sister of/niece of/cousin of Veterans, and a Veteran, myself, *I* will never forget. God bless our Veterans!!!!!!!!!!!

Will the next people whoever get in really care either? I hope so and end the war. So many young men dead or crippled. It is a shame and what are we winning. Higher gas prices, food prices, and much more. Our country is sliding into aliens and their care.

"Veteran on a wheelchair, shopping cart soldier...your country forgot" Why is it that people and politicians can forget so easily when the usefullness of a person has seemingly expired. This poem says so much, sad truth.
