Christmas Went

Before Christmas is over us and merry thoughts shouldn't be blurred by sad ones I will post this one for many of my forgotten brothers and sisters out of uniform, out of everybody's life, out of everybody's compassion.
Our Homeless War Veterans.

Poem Artwork

According to Nation Magazine, there are 131,000 homeless Vets, and about 18 suicides per day among America’s 25 million Vets.

Dedicated on Christmas 2009 to all the homeless and forgotten War Veterans, our brothers and sisters. Semper Fi

Christmas went and Santa didn’t come,
nor Rudolph the rein with the red nose,
no Christmas tree at the end of the alley,
where fingers and toes get cold and froze.

If one kept on wearing rags shredded by time,
can one call them to be the poor man clothes?
that everyone, passing by, don’t looks twice,
just hurry a little more fast, and then…ignore.

Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! to you all!
this Holiday Season had hunger for a few more,
in the company of a never complaining little dog
even the right to the American dream forgoes.

Yes it was Christmas, without family or friends,
not a nice way to awake on Christmas Eve, alone,
with the only warm coming from inside the church
where they celebrate the birth of the Father’s Son.

Back in the alley he will hold the little pet in his arms
sharing with the trembling dog his vanishing warmth,
feeling the despair for a long night, but knowing that
Santa at least had found, for his little brother, a bone.

Christmas came…and went, and you get another year,
to wander the streets until the next wearing red roses,
another lonely Holy Night like this one will come, or,
an angel will take both where there is that final love.

It's quite embarrassing living in a country where those who were once responsible for us, for making it possible to sit all warm and cozy under a Christmas tree beside a flickering fire, year after year, decade after decade... are somehow not our responsibility in the aftermath when they return, after the parades, after the salutes saluted...the dedication that was expected of them, and given!
When they come home...Yes, many America forgets too easily in many aspects...I pray all our Vets will feel the Spirit of a "Christmas Come" for "Christmas Went" should be GONE!
...So, so sad, Georg and I commend your continued heart for these fine Veterans.
Love and Peace~

George you have nearly brought tears to my eyes. I have suggested an International State of Humanity in my last posting, not run a state as such but to be a voice for the voiceless wherever they are and whoever they happen to be. Any believe me George you are the soul of that State. Thanks

Such a travesty when so many still walk the streets when they could have a place to live. When will mankind learn...

Be always safe,

You and I must have been on the same thought process today (my poem F--king Season) runs along the same lines. Yet I still love Christmas and the magic in the air and every now and then a miracle does occur. So maybe our words will spark even one person with money to help out a homeless person this season than we have helped.

How your words hit our hearts, Gerog. The sad part is: How do we find these Vets? Many of us are unable to drive under the bridges, around shelters, or other places. I've even called VFW halls to see if they know how to find our homeless vets...they suggested to watch the streets. That wasn't a good answer for me. These veterans need our attention and understanding...you bring out the dire necessity in your poem that exposes the truly sadness of our veterans situations...thank you for that, dear friend!

Home and holidays are too often remembered without happy thoughts.
Heavy hearts are made more so by a bottle or a needle.
Sometimes the pain is too much to bear, hoping that a better place awaits in the next life.

Georg,

As long as there are Marines, or those of us who serve(d), none will be left behind and forgotten. :( Sad one today - well done.

131,000 homeless Vets, and about 18 suicides per day among America’s 25 million Vets.

A damned shame, and it has been for far too long a time. I've met far too many homeless vets, and I've sadly known a few who did commit suicide, because we, as a nation, have completely forgotten them, for far too long.

There are also far too many homeless pets; and it always breaks my heart when I see a homeless person, with their homeless pet. Yet many of them care for their furry friends better than those of us with homes often do.

The wounds are so utterly deep
Penetrating truths here Georg
Sorrows of lonesomeness
Hero’s in the wastrels of poverty
Cast aside with yesterday's news
& yet even worse this life lived
by those...our Heros...brave...
now isolated into homelessness
And this man…here in your photo
Being loved by his Sheppard…
This post is heavy…
