Desert Road - Wikapedia

Over a million miles and more to go...

Poem Artwork

The Road

I’ve traveled down the road to yesterday,
and thought I'd found my way.

But childhood dreams and other things,
always came into play.

When childhood's lost, there is a cost,
that’s always greater than you pay.

So that's why I'm on the road I'm on today.
It's full of bumps and curves, and so steep,
I can barely make the grade.

But it's the road that I chose now,
and it's the road I've made.

I've mapped the road ahead with care,
plotted every fork and curve to nowhere.

And nowhere is a place not to be,
for up ahead, as far as I can see.

The road looks smooth and straight,
with an uphill trend, no curve or bend.

But then, always prepared, I'll keep my eyes out,
for that sudden trend, prepared to dodge and fend.

Off any obstacle in my way,
until the bitter end... of the road.

I wonder how many in this world really map and plan their roads yet keep thinking they really are nowhere...A philosophically written poem for those of us that may wish to ponder these thoughts...Well written Ron

Thank you

You can be my navigator anytime, Ron! You're obviously good with maps and planning and I, too, have an aversion to arriving nowhere and will avoid it at all costs... Nowhere is, after all, so different to being "lost" - which, by comparison, is a thrilling part of life's adventure. Really like the care with which you have set this out and expressed this... QED!! LOL!! :)) xx

Wow Ron! You captured life's road ,and it comes close to being a downer on life, but then, that's the way we choose our roads I guess.
Deep stuff! Well said!

Courage-filled language. My favorite line is: "And nowhere is a place not to be," because I read it to say that there is nowhere that is a place you should not be, as we can be anywhere. Uplifting poem. Thank you ~~ Diana Legun

If only life's road was as straight and even as the one in the pic! Very much enjoyed this, Ronald!

Life is a complicated journey...and we think we can plan ahead..but it is the unexpected dirt track that can pull us off course...However even here there are valuable lessons to be learned if we choose to see them...

Ron, the road we choose is paved with our emotions and experiences. All are filled with the bumps of obstacles and challenges. All are filled with rewards. When we get the paving mix correct the ride is smooth and enjoyable. Just keep driving and you are sure to find it my dear friend. I wish you peace and love, Jon Michael

Good one Ron. Bumpy roads, curvy roads, back roads, in roads, hilly roads, roads to no where or to the future. There are lots of roads and we all travel one or more of them at one time or another, but to my way of thinking those "old" roads that lead us back to memories of the past certainly do have a prominent place in the hierarchy.

Nicely done. Dick

whichever road it is, Ron,
just keep going..none of them is easy
and yet all of them offer something,
and so it goes

enjoyed your take and point of view here

Sharing your thoughts traveling roads,
I have traveled the straight and narrow
of your picture *Ronald* however, not alone
...because each road is a culmination of all,
we can become more than one of each!!!!

Ron,
A road without the curves or bumps would be boring, too sharp curves and to high the bumps precarious our roads have had similarities but all are unique as your verses always are thanks for the wonderful lines.

My road, Ron, had so many bumps and detours and led to that elusive place call nowhere, which seems to be your destination. We may have traveled different roads, but we are hearty travelers to be where we are today.

Your piece acknowledges the irony today that even as people seem to be going forward, they are without compass or map. My only suggestion for your premise here is to consider the off-road exploration that also affords rewards only the inordinate adventurer can appreciate.
