"Fires on the Plain" is a Japanese
classic film about a Japanese soldier
left on a island in Philippines
who resorts to eating "monkey meat"
(human flesh) rather than surrender.
It could also refer to the perennial
fires set by lightning on all the
grassy prairies like the Great Plains
of North America. Lyrics from White
Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane.

Stress 2.0

Life is a paradox of wax and wane,

stress comes to everyone,

like fires on the plain.

From the moment we burst,

from the womb to gulp air,

our thirst never ceases,

its stress always there.

Mothered and nurtured,

we don't seem to have a care.

We forget we cried out loud,

stressed those who were there.

The perils of childhood,

challenge us all.

Some take it better,

some take a fall.

The stress of the test,

many hurdles to cross.

Can leave us in shambles,

because of the loss.

We all can't be winners,

and winning has its cost.

Responsibility grows,

and it never ends,

for the winner or the lost.

The pressure of becoming,

adult and on our own.

Some take it in stride,

and some stay at home.

So many stress relievers,

we've tried them large and small.

Most of them create more stress,

or do nothing at all.

"Go ask Alice,

when she's 10 feet tall."

The pressure to succeed,

make something of our lives.

Can push us over the edge,

like a bad case of hives.

We've denied stress so long,

when it finally comes to roost.

We have no more adrenaline,

our systems have lost their boost.

And just when we've conquered,

all of our life's ills,

along comes stress sickness,

and all of its bills and pills.

And the stress continues onward,

with pain after pain.

A never-ending battle,

with more loss than gain.

Until the ultimate stress reliever,

dementia of the deceiver,

or in Alzheimer's grip's pleasure.

For those not so fortunate,

to have lost the feel of pain,

the ultimate stress reliever,

is welcome death we disdain.

Or better yet you have to let that stress go at the end of the day,
enjoy your moments of happiness and blissful scenarios...I have to agree with Mr. Ed we are our worst enemy.

Always,

Ronald, life would be beautiful: if we could live stress free.
Nice poem.

Converting stress into challenging goals (as you seem to have done) is my way of dealing with stress. Sandie hit some of the nails squarely on the head; that's why I disconnected my cable television, have two I-Phones gathering dust in my bookcase, don't do facebook, and installed K9 Security on my laptop to protect me from me. It took a while to figure out what to do with all that free time, but my stress sensors have adjusted nicely; now they only have to contemplate things like jumping out of airplanes and such fun stuff. As usual, lots of good thought-provocation, Ron!

I think we ourselves create the stress in our lives, and we create so much of it, it often becomes very difficult to live a happy life.

There are many forms of "stress" Some are man-made. Technology plays a large part in our society. Online communication with people around the world, the cultural difference creates difference in opinions, and thus creates stress in our daily communication online. Unfortunately, there are many people using the social media sites, the online facilities, and iphones to communicate so on some occasions words that are spoken too quickly can be misunderstood, and thus create more stress.

The solution to avoid stress is to stay away from social media sites. Almost everyone is a stranger when you think about it. Most just wake up in the morning and come to the social media sites immediately and start communicating with "friends" whom they have not even met yet. The solution to avoid stress is to stop going to the social media sites. Instead, just speak with the person who is next to you. Be REAL!!! Speak to a REAL PERSON face-to-face, so even when words are spoken wrongly you would still have the chance to explain.

Always be REAl!!...And stop living on purposeless empty dreams and promises over the internet. That would be the worst form of self-made stress when things go wrong.

...2.0 used...I guess...to reference...our modern-2.0-lives and media-technologies-era gadgets...that we use today vs the modern pandemic of stress...it creates...if not used wisely...Many of today are blogging-networking-using online tools to communicate-being perpetualy-connected...to it and through it...to everyone-everything-every culture-place on this planet-every race...and yet...dis-connected from the sense of presence...from ourselves...our consciousness...our hearts...our love...loosing the battle and not winning the war...in discovering our true potentials (creating stress)...conversation between cultures of human race (creating stress)...many jumping online...the first thing in the morning...with mind...body...soul...etc....etc...etc...
I see the wisdom 2.0 approach...to be adopted...soon?...with its mindfulness to enjoy our lives....I'm with the cheeky-charismatic Dalai Lama and following words use as my daily motto-goal-principle: ..."a successful/wise man is one that has spent an entire day on the bank of a river without feeling guilty about it".
Thank you Ron, for sharing your wonderful writing that could be the "heavens call" poem for many.

You hit the nail on the head. Now, what do we expect since be arrive in this world under stress. That is really why we yell and trimble; besides, its is cold.

A timely and topical issue that we all have to deal with in this modern world. I especially liked the easy flow of the rhyming that beautifully enhances the poem; it looks easy but is difficult to do. Well done! John

As your poem stirs up, there ought to be a government budget to research stress, given what was once perceived as stress is now a walk in the park. With 21st century stress in so impacted within us, one wonders when the power of minds in Washington will wake up and realize until we create some remedial means for this conflict, all International concerns need to take a lessor position.
