Amelioration Nation

Once again I thought I'd write a nonsense poem.
But, thoughts of the old movie, Soylent Green,
popped into my head as I thought of our melting
pot turning into a single, boring, plain existence,
arriving only because of the threat of a corporation
(a huge monopoly) being the only source of our
existence. Certainly a flat earth kind of existence
that no one would desire.

Amelioration Nation

Went on down to the station,
looking for a brand-new nation.

Looking more, less was found,
chasing tail round and round.

It seems all had melted in the pot,
ameliorated, on the spot.

Was no spice, no life, no grit,
tasteless bread pudding,
was all you get.

Where was the verve, the drive, the gall,
to figure it out; to conquer it all?

Survival had settled into a rut,
pruned the tree of every last nut.

All were living the proper prepper life,
boiled down to just, avoiding strife.

Sucking along on the corporate tit.
one-size-fits-all is what to get.

Couch potatoing a fantasy world,
where virtual stimulation is unfurled.

Just cruising along into stagnation,
riding the rail to amelioration nation.

You are so perceptive Ron, this is the direction we are headed. I remember that movie, it was a shocker. Congrats on your winning work for the Halloween challenge.

I wonder if you used the word "amelioration" to capture the attention. It certainly did mine as I read through your apt and timely verses, Ron. I would like to be optimistic about the world's (our nations too) condition but I am finding it harder to do so as time goes by. Love and peace,

Regis

Less 1984 and more Aldous Huxley. We are too preoccupied with toys failing to notice the perils that surround us.

Scarily poignant.

Sucking along on the corporate tit.

So damned sad what has happened to far too many of us, including most of our so called 'leaders' today, who seem to now love that corporate tit above all else.

Ron, I like the premise you preface the poem with but admit to a bit of dissonance with your use of amelioration in the title and ameliorated in the third stanza. My foggy recollections of the word are, to make something better, improve it or make it more tolerable. I certainly enjoyed the poem and what I feel you intended it to convey. Help me with the definition I must have missed something. May love and peace be always with you my dear friend. Jon Michael

I thought the word Amelioration meant getting for or to the better but from the reviews I don't see it as such...all seem to think that our nation is NOT getting better, or am I wrong, my definition of the the word off kilter...either way, I enjoyed this write as I enjoy all you do when you put pen to paper, as it were...-e-

That bowl of Gruel was only half full
But enough to make one ill
Your poem amused with a great notion
Colour of gruel is the pill
While we better ourselves with lotion.

Oh, for sure it is already here. Maybe I lived a life of extremes, and maybe my extremes were not thought out so well, but still, I sit here commenting on your important poem knowing I did not always color between the lines . . . That causes a smile to grace my face.

When you think of all the sensitivity issues and pussyfooting around by watering things down to gruel in the name of semantics and political correctness--it's already here!

If only your nonsensical poem weren't paradoxically so sensical.
