It is time that we start acknowledging the cause of more powerful storms in the Atlantic and Pacific and take action to curtail fossil fuels drastically.

Heat Sink

Thermodynamics is not a subject for the timid.
It is only understood by the mathematical few.
But the science gives us some understanding,
of the trouble we have gotten ourselves into.

The atmosphere is heating up,
all the records easily show.
While controversy rages on,
the numbers continue to grow.

These numbers bother people of power,
money and interest, in the status quo.
For their superiority lies in being right;
always being ahead and in the know.

But nature knows not ideology,
responds as it always does to strife.
Through extinction, migration and adaption,
in a never-ending cycle of renewing life.

The result is immense diversification,
a planet teeming with variety so blessed.
Where every corner of the living planet,
has myriad life, so different from the rest.

But atmosphere, land and water,
do not know biological life's distress.
They only respond to heat dynamics,
dictated by laws of equilibrium and rest.

We ask why storms are now greater,
in the Atlantic and Pacific realms?
It's only thermodynamics operating,
no one or thing is at their helms.

Like water going down the drain,
the heated air seeks great relief.
It spirals upward to a higher cool,
in a vortex of a great heat thief.

Sucking heat of overheated ocean,
the humid, overheated air.
Into the higher atmosphere,
where it hits the cold up there.

All this action creates wind and rain.
A natural heat sink of great refrain.
It is singing a song that we don't like.
Wind and flood in its destructive lane.

Science has clearly predicted,
more droughts, floods and storms.
Above all historic memory are coming,
above all reason and human norms.

The cause is quite clear,
still, hard for us to get a bead.
For power, plunder and greed,
Are desires far exceeding need.

When will we understand?
When will we heed?
Before it's too late,
our excess makes us bleed.

WELL SAID! More people should take into consideration what is happening to our planet and why the ravages of nature are assaulting us in various ways. The polar caps are melting and earths axis is tilting more and more, yet the powers that be don't try to make changes for our survival. Al Gore tried and he got shot down . Not many accepted his views ,,, BUT,,,, yet its happening and the end will not be a good one for any of us! This write is extremely profound !!!! ..... M,,,,, ( PS) NASA POSTED A WRITE UP about the tilting of earth's axis a while ago....

You present a convincing treatise on the reality of our climate instability and the denying element that continues to bring us closer to a fail-safe apocalyptic ending. More writers need to tackle this subject, as politicians will forever address it in a self serving manner, rather than for the planet's good.

Different ones have posed different reasons for climate change, but to feel it has begun happening since Trump took office...come on! No human wields that much power. Great work, Ron. Sometimes it doesn't take much to get the hornets to attack.

COMMON SENSE TELLS ONE TO PREPARE, USE CAUTION AND GET OUT OF IRMA'S PATH...IF ONE CAN. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS; WE ARE IN THE END-TIMES, RONALD, EXPECT...ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING! I AM AGREEING WITH RICHARD, WHOLEHEARTEDLY. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Powerful. The truth can be overwhelming at times, but we must heed nature's warnings.

You capture the need to change in an insightful way. I am sitting in the path of Irma as I write this review. It seems so obvious that we have to change the way we do things or risk the health of the planet and everyone and everything on it.

Nicely done. Although I don't think global warming is as dire as predicted by some, (I don't think any of us would have wanted to live during the last ice age) I do think people are often their own worst enemies.

Sometime in January I'll be reciting the limerick I wrote a while back:

The greenhouse effect I am knowing;
To protest right now I am going.
But oh my gee whiz,
I'm going that is,
If only it ever stops snowing.

A fine write on the subject of climate change. To answer the question posed at the end: I am afraid never. John

So someone feels all has begun happening since the eclipse, I think it's since Trump took office.
In reality, I have said before, how can anyone think that a planet with 7 1/2 billion people, and I don't know how many animals, all eating, pooping, consuming, polluting, doesn't affect the earth. And I always agree with Michael Schafer.

Enjoyed your thoughts, Ron. For some reason I'm not surprised at the wide (somewhat risible) range of response to this below. Jerry's response is the most sane. In the present climate I'm sure there are some idiots who will blame Trump. There is a lot more going on here than just thermodynamics, greed, and pollution. We are on the Creator's timetable. I find it intriguing how many major hurricanes are happening and forming after the August 21 Solar Eclipse. Peace... rlc

Nice and refreshing, Ron, even if the meter suffers a bit. Prosody is a hardnosed b**ch, of course...never fully sympathetic or understanding, even at the best of times.

That said, I was quite taken by M. Schafer's analogyy of (Earth) shaking off its fleas. I've felt for most of my life that the very best thing that could ever happen to poor old Mother Ghea is for Homo sapiens to self-eradicate (perhaps with Ghea's help, LoL), thereupon leaving 'Haumea' to make, and hopefully this time succeed in making, another 'highest eveolved sentient life form' that actually fulfills its promise. Humanity has long since indicated that it is unworthy of that fanciful sobriquet. Thanks for this cogent paean on Earth's plight.

Speaking of that, wifie here has absolutely NO understanding of basic thermodynamic laws. Every time I try to explain the principles of heat transfer to her (in reference to the house's HVAC system and how heat stored in the attic during a hot summer day gradually releases itself into the house after dark), she gives the appearance of someone who finds a noose around his neck, but doesn't know that releasing the knot will resolve things. [Perhaps that's a VERY poor analogue to use here, but it works (;-).]

I've never disbelieved in climate change; my disbelief comes when they try to tell us it is man made. That's a great poem, Ron. ". . . nature knows not ideology"

"The cause is quite clear,
still, hard for us to get a bead.
For power, plunder and greed,
Are desires far exceeding need" great lines indeed.

A sensitive soul quietly watching humanity err, helplessly.
Well done, Ron.

Great write, and your last 2 stanzas sum everything up perfectly. And still there will be the non believers and deniers of climate change. And as I have often said, even you don't think climate change is real, there's still nothing wrong with going green. Climate change is nothing more than the earth trying to heal itself from the damage inflicted by man, and if worse comes to worst, the earth will shake us off like a bad case of fleas.
