The Coin Collection
A silver coin in a cardboard slot,
just a fleeting glance receives,
but when it's neatly inserted there
by someone who believes,
It's more than just a single coin --
It tells a story now --
and just in case you're wondering,
I'll gladly tell you how:
Just as coins accumulate,
the waiting slots to fill,
Hour upon hour and year upon year,
a marriage bond is built.
The treasure of a thoughtful word,
the interest in a smile --
the jingling of shared laughter
as you walk a weary mile;
Brushing away each other's tears,
relinquishing a goal,
forgiveness freely given --
All contribute to the whole.
When sorrow falls upon the way,
or anger dulls the gleam,
the polish of your faithful love
renews the tarnished dream.
The empty spaces waiting here
don't mar this fine collection;
There must be room for each other's flaws;
A barren soul demands perfection.
So when you look upon these coins
securely in their place,
May they remind you that true love
can shine upon your face.
Deposit in the bank of love,
where little things mean a lot;
Your joys will be compounded
when you give it all you've got!
This is an outstanding poem. Its closing line is pure spiritual gold.
