                 We apologize....

Answering the call to serve and protect all,
many good men took their place in line.
Now buried Ardennes, Belgium for their sacrifice,
five thousand three hundred twenty nine.

We apologize.....

Leaving mothers, fathers behind,
sisters, brothers, children and wives.
Lorraine, France and Florence, Italy,
buried fifteen thousand two hundred fifty one lives.

We apologize.....

We are told we are brash, uncaring, arrogant,
living hard, fighting hard, so many are gone.
Twenty seven thousand six hundred twenty three,
buried Luxembourg, Netherlands, Meuse Argonne.

We apologize.....

Defending our sovereignty, working with allies,
now their sacrifices nothing more than a glance.
Twenty one thousand seven hundred eight five,
in Edpinal, Normandy, Olse-Aisne, Rhone, France.

We apologize.....

Our military is strong, our nation is giving,
yet we still feel the sting, to us they verbally lance.
Buried twelve thousand six hundred ninety five,
Somme, St. Mihiel, Brittany, Aisne-Marine,France.

We apologize.....

Brookwood, Cambridge, England our men sleep,
defending people of foreign lands, doing their best.
Flanders Field and Henri Chapelle, Belgium,
twelve thousand six hundred forty men now rest.

We apologize.....

Time and time again we gave our oath,
answering the call to pleas, desperate requests.
Suresnes, France and Sicily, Italy,
nine thousand four hundred two forever guests.

We apologize.....

Bringing peace, rebuilding, offering aid and money,
perhaps it is time all clamp their lip.
We all need each other to harmonize mother earth,
say a long over due thank you, join at the hip.

We apologize.....

One hundred four thousand, three hundred sixty six,
far from home, so many eternally sleep.
Just a small window, a brief period of time,
yet our patriots have helped, in our hearts we keep.

We apologize.....

My grandfather, father, uncles, family and friends,
your family too have all tried to make amends.
Remaining diligent, in our hearts hold the dream,
remembering the past, our sacrifice never ends.

Thank you and may God bless!

Karen, you really captured the spirit of America. As the Bible says, to whom much is given, much is required. We continue to give because we consider it our responsibility to help those weaker than ourselves, yet we are maligned on every front. God bless America.

those that would apologize for the galant defenders of freedom around the globe, are not of the same cut as true Americans -- those fallen, and falling troops, are owed more than the uncaring are capable of understanding -- their very freedom to speak with baseless remarks is owed to the brave gone before them -- this is an important message in an era when being an American is considered by some of our detractors abroad, and at home, to be sub-human -- peace and love Karen -- Jon Michael

Excellent message, how very very true. I can't stand how America is supposed to be the referree and to mind our own business at the same time, it's such a joke. The men and women who served this country are what keep this country free and what it is. God bless them, here and in heaven.

I remember Vietnam when I read these words Karen. But not the sadness of the war but the greatness of the men who fought in it. The ultimate of freedom has been the sacrifice of lives. I am proud of you my sister for this diligent poem and I am proud to be an American! Peace!!!

So powerful and compelling, Karen. Like a sacred liturgy, you have us all joining in with your "we apologise" responses. Your setting out of the facts makes a very stark impact. In fact, I think it would be a very cleansing and healing thing if we could join together in words such as these each Remembrance Day we share. You articulate the pain and regret excellently. Very strong writing. Kate xx

Karen,

Undone by the power of these lines - those that time forgot - except through a few Poets that remember the cost, the cost, the terrible cost!

My big, strong Daddy; his four brothers; my Mom's brother spent time overseas; they saw action; they left part of themselves on foreign shores (my Uncle Duke, more than anyone - he survived Bataan). Thank God, they all came home - many thousands upon thousands more didn't.

We owe those who served a debt that can never be repaid. Anyone who donned the uniform should lack for NOTHING.

You honor their memories, as well as their families, in moving lines of regret - mine joins yours. So sad we've become apathetic -

And that picture stirs my soul. Well done, Karen and Robert.

(((HUGS))) and love to you and the gang, Karla. *tears*

This is not only good poetry, but good comment on the state of affairs, or the affairs of state, I could write a mile myself, but I won't, it be to black. You have clinched some great write here, one can easily see it comes from the heart. Hugs! Jasmin Horst

It is time to get help to ALL war Veterans cost what cost will, because if they didn't spare trillions to go to war they surely can commit trillions to give what they promised.
And someone should have rebutted that Pentagon jerk that said, "you fight with what you have not with what you wish you had" that's the one that should be apologizing.
We apologize...its heard loud and clear.

Karen, my first response to your poem was the admiration for the research you must have put into it. Then secondly, I thought what a marvelous way to record this kind of history. And added to that thought was my emotional response--the horror of so many dead, the pain of knowing what loved ones must have suffered. This is a great write.

Karen, this touched my heart deeply, for as a Canadian son of a war vet who gave his all on the battlefields of Europe during WWII and returned to only find work as a laborer and die young from the illneses of war and time. I watched him broken have to plead for welfare when his lungs ruined from years in trenches and his heart weakened till it couldn't keep up with the only job he could find. I know he is but one of the other deaths of all these brave servicemen from so many countries who walked forward when they were needed. Thank you Karen for such a moving and honest tribute so dearly needed but not asked for by these men and woman.
