Her Nantucket home,
Hoping, praying
To see white sails
Appear on the horizon
Bringing her beloved
Safely back to her
After so long at sea.
There has been no word
From him,
There rarely was,
So she,
Like the other wives,
Went about her life,
Caring for their children,
Soon bearing the one
He left within her,
All the while hoping,
Praying every day,
That he will return and
She will hold him
Once more.
Back in the day, sailing was a very dangerous occupation. So many sailors never returned to wives and children.
