A Memory

i miss you old friend
cannot think of you without tears
and a longing to sit beside you
in the magic coolness of the night

others walk along your shore now
but my thoughts yet abide there
where your waves often calmed
the restlessness of my soul

i miss the geese and ducks
floating by, diving for dinner
i miss the cranes that stood
fearlessly, defiantly on the dock
as if it was their property

i miss the majestic eagle circling
and calling to me from the high pines
nothing is the same now for me

you were my comfort once
my center of serenity and hope
now you are only my treasured memory

i miss being witness to the tenderness
of Father Sky kissing Mother Earth
just beyond the horizon of your banks

i miss the way storms lifted you
and slammed you against the shore
the lightning and moonlight
dancing across your dark face

they say life goes on
and so it does but memories remain
unchanging, still able to move us

i miss the lapping sounds of your waves
carried on breezes though open windows
and i still weep for you old friend
