Moonlight on quiet water,
Not for long, like a squatter.
The water but a placed lake,
Ripples sparkled in their wake.
The moon shows sides of its face,
No craters, just it amazing grace.
The scene one of hushed peace,
The moonlight merely on lease.
Ah, the moon a ghost in the sky,
Waxing and waning ever so sly.
At first, the soft light has heft,
Soon thereafter not much left.
Nothing left but cloud shadow,
Now darkens the sky’s window.
Night after night by Heaven sent,
Night after night its mystery lent.
Until one day the moon disappears,
Gone it seems for a thousand years.
Only to appear again the next night,
A sliver of itself, but a glorious sight.
What if the moon never returned,
Our faith in Nature’s order burned.
The moon reflects mysterious phases,
Filling our hearts as its glow amazes.

I just love poems about the moon and this ranks right up there with the very best!! The moon has a very strong pull on my psyche. It's a love/hate thing. LOL!
The moon shines on a placid lake. But does placid mean that there are no ripples to reflect the soft white light?
Our whole natural cycle of life depends partly on the moon, including the menstrual cycle and who knows what other subtle affects there are? The moon is very necessary to our survival and that of all life on earth.
Man has looked at the moon in awe since the beginning. The last two lines sums that up beautifully. I would have loved to see the moon on water during last nights full moon, unfortunately the body of water at our place was the bird bath.
The phases of the moon are magical, even mystical. The world will never be the same without the moon. Reminds me of a poem I wrote a while ago about what if the sun didn't rise.
Explore the mystery of how nature makes unexpected gifts of creative wonders to an unsuspecting caregiver one late night and early morning in southeastern Georgia, USA.
