The Four Seasons

By John Herlihy

I thank the four seasons for their annual gift,

In arriving on time my moody heart to uplift.

What would we do without a change of seasons,

That enrich our lives for their own unique reasons.

Spring falls from the heavens in nourishing rains,

Awakening dormant grasses far across the plains.

The hibernating flowers now lift their weary heads;

Feathered spring sparrows fly high as newly-weds.

Summer basks in the glow of the sun’s furnace;

Melted glaciers now run free as rivers in earnest.

The butterflies search flowers for golden nectar;

The fireflies light the way as a nocturnal specter.

Autumn trees bow with the weight of their load;

The multi-colored leaves scattered on the road.

By autumn’s end, forlorn trees naked and bare,

The barren landscape sends a chill as we stare.

Winter arrives from the North with its arctic blast,

Steering us into the wind as we stand at the mast.

Earth’s carpet covered in a rich blanket of snow,

Inspiring a peace we would not otherwise know.

Through all the changes a birdhouse hangs still;

Weathers batter and blow the little house at will.

Rain runs from the eaves, the snow rests heavy;

Faithful birds still come to feed and make merry.

I thank the four seasons for their annual gift,

But in the depths of my heart, I do carefully sift.

Seeking the truth left behind by the four seasons,

To discover the true meaning of my own seasons.

I THANK GOD THAT I LIVE IN THE NECK OF THE WOODS WHERE THERE ARE 4 SEASONS...I'D GROW TIRED OF IT ALWAYS BEING HOT, OR ALWAYS BEING COLD. BUT WITH THE MASS CLIMATE CHANGE THE EARTH IS EXPERIENCING...WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS? IN ANY CASE, I AM THANKFUL TO BE IN THE TEMPERATE ZONE WHERE JUST WHEN I GET A BIT FIDGETY ABOUT THE WEATHER(YES, I'M A HUMAN THAT NEEDS PRAYER(SMILE))...HERE COMES A LOVELY CHANGE, WITH BEAUTIFUL NEW VIEWS TO ENJOY. THANKS FOR SHARING, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS.

Great takes on the seasons, John! Seasons like the periods in our lives all happen for a reason. The beauty of this poem!

Love ya!

Seasons come and go but so do we. I like the idea of having our seasons in life.

You made me long to see the four seasons of the temperate zone once again. But alas, I can no longer tolerate the rigors of winter up north, so I'm stuck in this place of very hot and humid (okay with me) summer and fall trying to become spring in between with occasional, frost.

So, winter is really nonexistent, and fall and spring are greatly shortchanged in your vivid view.

Excellent poetry, my friend. I've thought, however, that there should only be two seasons, spring and fall. Eh . . . I suppose we would complain about that.

Beautiful descriptions of each season in each stanza, and then that last stanza comparing nature's seasons to the mystery of our own. A truly great write.
