Poem Artwork

... the revolving door
of history pulls me back
into its whirl, one

disaster after
another repeating in
dizzying assaults,

until my feet go
out from under me.  No more,
no more; make it stop --

but time marches on,
and so do the memories
swirling 'round my head:

JFK; Martin
Luther King; political
unrest; Vietnam;

the courage of the
first Black student going to
a white school flooded

by hoses of hate;
Americans held hostage;
assassination

attempts; presidents
and popes fall under the gun;
terrorist attacks

explode on foreign
shores and are flown into twin
towers, here at home;

the sounds of silence
of shock and awe are missiles
dropped over Baghdad;

protests;  headlines scream
the body count; anger rules;
celebrities call

the shots; money talks;
inflation; global warming;
who's minding the nukes???.

The revolving doors
of history spits me out
into a nightmare

that I've had before --
the same crap, different year --
got the tape, somewhere.

(c) 2007, Karla Dorman (4/11)

History repeats itself. This is outward looking. You are not just confined to one territory or on stage in life. You have powerfully summerised what is going on in the USA, Asia, Europe and Africa. You also described things that happened in one corner of the world and came to the other.

Thank you Karla. This is beautiful.

The "Revolving Door" brings on so many thoughts...so much that has happened and continues to happen...going around and around.

But in order for a revolving door to operate, someone has to push it...Some push it from the left...some from the right, some place the force with a hand...some makes it revolve, especially if their hands are full... using their butts!
...and have you ever noticed how they never stop in a big city of noise and confusion, of hustle and bustle?
So it is, how history occurs!

Depending on the force...and in order to get out and on with life...it too must stop!
...to hesitate, for someone to get off!

Some step out in grace, others just slip out without any hesitation...some make it come to a complete stop...others just play...going around and around...Oh! I could! LOL!

This was fun! Enjoyed your recap too! Although that would make me sad if I choose to go around and around...Nah! I want off!
Love and Peace~

The revolving doors

into a nightmare

A very sad nightmare, indeed, as is most of human history, since we first walked this planet.

Will we ever learn? Or will the tape just keep re-winding?

These facts are part of each one of us. There are times when we live in Hell. The trying part of life is to outgrow hatred and negatives and shine in spite of it all.
Feep thoughts in your pen.

Karla,

Very powerful poem. I think I have that same tape. In fact, there are still many instant replays. I'm told, "history repeats itself." Does it really or are we just afraid to turn the record flip side? Karla, you've many exquisite lines here.

Agree with your sis on this one Karla this is a powerful and dramatic look at the history of violence and change this world has seen since I was a child. Well done and nothing omitted. VEry good.

Whoa, pretty powerful lines you pen, Karla. Nothing really changes doesn't it? Same script, but different players in the starring roles, and too many chiefs, but not enough Indians. Sad. God help our world!!

Very well done; brava!

You can say that recent history left us trying to slam shut a revolving door...but, it keeps spinning.

There was a song from the 50s-60s:
"...They are rioting in Africa
There's strife in Siam
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow man..."

Nothing has changed. I commiserate with you.

Think that is in order, pretty powerful! Sometimes life is not much fun, especially those things that we cannot control.
