when i was five, stuck fast to
the bed with nightmares, i screamed
for Mom. stomping up the stairs,
larger than fear itself (at
least in my mind). she came and
unbucked me into her
lap. i knew i was safe, then.
when i had a bad day at
school, i could count on her to
make things right. no bullies could
reach around her to get to
me: there, in her arms, i was
loved and protected, and life
would be better tomorrow.
she died nineteen years ago today.
and here i am, a child in
an adult's body, still scared
of the dark, rolled around by
sudden storms -- a ship that has
lost its anchor. i feel lost
and alone in the world: how
could she have left me this way?
i miss Mom's presence in my
life: how i wish i could run
to the comfort that she gave.
nothing could harm me as long
as she was near, an angel,
my provider, God in the
form of what love was: my Mom.
and now Daddy's gone, too ...
orphaned. abandoned. you
never get over the loss of
your parents, no matter how
old you get, especially when
you were as blessed as i
was, who had a loving Mom
and Dad. some not that lucky.
I am blessed to have my parents, but I often feel sad at the realization that both of them no longer have their parents. I am very greatful to God for wonderful parents. The transparency and vulnerability expressed by this poem is priceless in a world that is fast becoming calloused by inceasing sin. I thank God for your voice Karla and hope you keep on writing for a long long time!
Karla this poem is breathtakingly heart touching, honestly had to
fight back the tears.
I know how you feel, however you have the security and love which continues with you to this day
We all know they are still there watching over you.
Continued blessings and take the best of care.
all of our insecurities surface with the sudden realization that our parent or parents are forever gone -- a friend of mine at age sixty, asked when his mother passed away, a dozen years after his dad, "does this mean I have to grow up now?" -- I still think about that question with a fair degree of regularity -- our security blanket is forever gone -- our very best friends and mentors are no more, when our parents are gone -- this is a heart felt tribute to your mother and father Karla -- I know you miss them dearly -- peace and love to you -- Jon Michael
Karla, you said it all so well... we suffer from similar circumstances...and we both feel left alone...afraid of the dark...needing their comfort...and nothing and no one seems to fill that need... we just...keep going... missing...and filling in the best we can... Today is my parents anniversary...don't even know how many they would have been... guess more than I am agewise... so... they would have gone by now anyway...just that...no way is ever good...when they go away... the photo is very lovely too... hugs, lindalaw
Beautiful Karla, and thank you for being proud of them when so few are these days. Your mom and Dad will thank you too, when you are reunited one day! I found that the longer they're gone the more we miss them...Great pic!
I hear you ,,I too miss my Dad, he was all Irish..full of humor and love! I think of the happy times and his smiling green eyes! You were blessed with good memories.
Love,
Christine
You are so right I lost both my parents almost thirty years ago and I don't think there is a week goes by I do not think of one or the other of them but I have come to see them in my mirror more and more each year...
Karla dear, I feel your pain. I think only those who have lost both parents and know the empty feeling of "being an orphan" can truly understand. Mom and Dad are up there and waiting for us and we'll see them soon enough.
My love to you today, *Glen*
Beautiful tribute to our mom; even though we thought she disciplined us too much, she did it out of love. She demonstrated that time and time again. And now daddy's gone, and both mom and dad would be proud of us; what a lovely write! Well done, Karla; brava!
They still live on in us. Remember that.
(((HUGS))) and much love, your twin, Karen Lynn. :( >tears! <

(Richard M. Feldman) Ever since I was a young boy, the only thing I wanted to be was a cowboy. I wanted to own and work on a real ranch, with cattle and horses. Especially horses.
While I never became a cowboy, considering everything I have done
TRUE STORY. Bella survived an abusive powerbroker father with organized crime ties, a drug-addicted mother and a physically/sexually abusive brother. Shocking & inspirational. When she couldn't cry, she tattooed a crying angel to cry for her.
