How Brave The Squirrel

I see you cat,
Crouching, looking at me.
Why would you think I wouldn’t see?
One second’s lapse means death for me.

I never venture far from the tree,
When the twitch of your tail I do see.
The ground is where my food does lie,
So tempting you I must try.

Pecans, Acorns, Pine Nuts, all,
My Winter storage from the Fall.
Not brave am I, hunger I must sate,
Mother Nature causes me tempting fate

Each time that I am on the ground,
Searching for what might be found,
I stay alert because you see,
One second’s lapse means death for me.

As we do not have squirrels here in OZ, I don't get to enjoy their little furry antics....But I have watched reruns of Chevy Chase in that ridiculous comedy bout Christmas, coz I lurrrve that squirrel.
It seems everyone is terrified of it LOL, but then I have seen grown men leap about when a possum is on the loose here.

The squirrel in your photograph is a real cutey! We feed them cheeze-it crackers when they come around in the spring. They are such a delight to observe. Nice story....

Brill. Everday I watch the little tricksters playing dare with the cats. They are fantastic and funny to watch, jumping from tree to tree, and once they get to know you, one can handfeed them..

I love this most apt poem, of an ode to the squirrel...

To venture out into the world [for any living creature] is always risking one's life. You wrote this about a squirrel, but I've internalized this to mean - life and the trials that we each face.

He can come and join my bunch. They own my back deck, and pelt me with acorns or hickory nuts when I try to sit and drink coffee on the deck.

Let me tell you...that wiley squirrel knows more about that cat than you can surmise. Squirrels are as sly as a fox too.

Ahh U have a few of the furry little critters in my back yard who have taken up residence...and vie for the supply of bird seed I put out. They are cute if you can keep them on the outside looking in...lol
