the floorboard creaked
the front door squeaked
the cat arched his back
and something shrieked
looking up from my book
the cat leapt from the chair
onto the hearth
then up to the mantle
where he paced like a panther
and yowled at invisible air
I felt a tingle arise
on the hairs of my arms
the back of my neck
prickled alarm
perhaps a ghost
had passed through the room
or a haunting spirit
un-resting with gloom
leaving a chill and
disrupting the cat
I think I hear cackling
and broomsticks now tapping
out on the sidewalk
now the front steps
and finally the door
I hear…rap, rap, rap
with nervous hand
I open the door
and am greeted by seekers
of treats and more
witches and dragons
skeletons and goblins
released from their daydreams
transformed into night beams
*** giggling & grinning ***
