This is about losing your furry friend, as I've just lost mine. This isn't the best of poems but I needed to share my pain. Thank you for listening.

Poem Artwork

An Empty Box

Sitting in the car, I hold an empty pet carrier in my lap
Tears run down my face, knowing he’ll never come back.
Only hours ago, the carrier weighed about ten pounds
With a little meow, but it’s resident lives there no more.

When we took him inside to see the vet, I already knew
what the verdict would be. He was old, and weak and could
barely see.   She said the words I would dread,
we could prolong his life a little more, but he’d be in pain all the time.
Or you can know he’s had a good life, than lovingly say good bye.
Deciding to do the last thing we knew was best, he would at
last be at peace and able to rest. Before he left, he looked at me
with his loving emerald eyes, as if to say it will be all right,
I’ll see you again.

And if there is a Cat heaven, and I’m sure there is, my Bob cat is
there now, and hears a voice, “come on in”

In loving memory of Bob, 1992 - 2008

A nice tribute to loved pets everywhere. I also remember the day we had to put our dear furry doggie down. We knew he would not get better -- although he looked fine most of the time. But he was getting weaker all the time...we knew the time had come. I brought him to the vet's and stayed with him .. the vet told me I could talk to him all the way through but somehow I couldn't say a word. When the tears came almost unexpectedly I realized that unless you are willing to love them, you really shouldn't have a pet. They deserve that for their faithfulness. Susan

Well, I'm glad you came to my site today, so I could come here and catch this. YOU & I are in the same boat. My dear old cat from 1991 went the same way back in April (see my poem, Happiness & Sorrow) I too had to "take her down" on April 29th. And you know the hardest thing for me was as they took her inside (they won't let you go in where they give the needle) she looked back at me, very sick of course, but there was almost a question in her eyes: would it be all right? Would we see each other again? That moment has been breaking my heart over and over every since that day. Please read my poem and I DO FEEL for YOU (I'm a cat guy) I hope the sorrow softens with time.
Love to you, michael

So very sorry for your loss, Mary. As a life-long pet lover, I've endured that empty box far too often, and I truly know the pain it brings. May your beloved Bob live on in your heart and soul, forever. And I truly believe our devoted pets deserve Heaven.

A very heartwarming, endearing piece expressing all the emotions we all feel when one of our beloved furry family members passes on to live in God's home. My thoughts and prayers are will you and perhaps you will find comfort knowing he is once again whole frolicking through the flowers and grass in heaven. Perhaps he will meet up with my Cheyenne and they can frolick together through eternity....

Be always safe,
Karen

Hi Mary, first off I want to say that I'm sorry and that my condolescences go out to you for the lost of your cat.Pets are indeed very special creatures and people may not understand the bond between a person and their pet.Don't be sorry for writing your poem as you stated that it may not be the best of poems.Poetry comes from the heart and as long as we express our feelings whether they are happy, sad, anger, etc, then it will always be true poetry.I enjoy reading your poem very much and thanks for expressing your feelings pertaining your pet.I know it wasn't easy for you to write this poem, but expressing your feelings made you feel better and stronger which is the bright side

My little cocker spanie Joy died at age 13 too and I still miss her after 3 years. She was in pain too and it was best she went to doggie heaven. She looked me in the eye at last too and I fed her a piece of cake as it was the day before my birthday and she always did like to eat people food. She swallowed it then died, I'll never forget that day. Oct 23, 2006. I have cat Seashore who is 10 and hope she lasts more years yet, cause she is all I have now since Tom my hubby died and left me too. I find it a joy to come home to Seashore and have her around, but I do hate to see pets leave this world. I do understand your sadness and you felt you had to write about it and share it with us and it helped you some I hope. We are all with you in your sorrow. It comes to all us pet lovers.
