My favorite pastime these days
Seems to be walking these city streets
Looking in windows
Of houses that seem to be fortified
To keep me out
Or maybe to keep all the happiness in
Can’t have it spilling out
And infecting unsuspecting pedestrians
With unnecessary and unwanted joy
I, however, look as if, given the opportunity
I might walk into one of these homes
Offer to set the table
Or give the baby a bath
Anything to make it look as if I belong
So that maybe no one would ask
Who the hell I am
And why I am intruding
Some people just don’t know when they aren’t wanted
I would see written in their faces
So I stay out
To avoid that particular pain
And I walk
And look
A trick passes me by, slowing to take a look
But he hurries on
He must realize that he might never get rid of me
If I mistook his lust for affection
I walk
Until darkness and common sense sends me home
Where I can set the table
For a family who loves me
Or give the baby a bath, if we had one
And I know that my loneliness
Is not their fault
Not their failing, but something in me
Sadness is intrinsic
In who I am
It is the only emotion that makes me feel safe
The one I feel comfortable with
Like an old friend
It doesn’t require much effort
To co-exist comfortably
For now…

Awwww hon. You know that I understand absolutely what you're going through right now. I've been there, felt that, but I have to tell you that you are NEVER on the outside with me. Sometimes we are out there together, but I'd never leave you alone out there. After all, you never leave ME out there.
