I'm sorry I haven't posted in awhile. I've been in the hospital. I am much better and back home. I've missed the Den so much and so glad to be back among some of the best poets around. Huggs an love to all and God bless.
No video games or heavy metal
When I was just a child
Neighbors were always welcome
To come in and stay awhile
A game of hopscotch on the walk
From a wobbly child's hand
Song's were sung in a language
We could all understand
Mama canned from the garden
She washed clothes on a board
We didn't seem to miss
The luxuries we couldn't afford
No mall, no Walmart or McDonald's
How did we ever get by
Life was playing in the sun
Eating Mama's apple pie
I remember a swing set
Daddy had put up out back
And listening to the lone whistles
From a nearby railroad track
There was no talk of dope
Not one reason to fight
No one was ever afraid
Doors were left unlocked at night
There were no reports of shootings
On the morning news
Nothing was ever thrown away
Someone else could use
We learned respect from Mama
To say Yes Ma'm and Thank You
We wasn't above a spanking
I've been known to have a few
The church bells rang on Sunday morn
It was heard from miles around
An old fashioned church on the corner
Where Salvation was found
Daddy and Mama are gone now
But no further than a prayer
In the faraway whispers of childhood
Where a child of ten lives there
A game of hopscotch on the walk
From a wobbly child's hand
Song's were sung in a language
We could all understand
I grew up without a TV or fastfood--at least until I was a teenager and all that stuff crowded in pushing out the good stuff of my youth. The America of today is not the America of then. The people that built this America are mostly gone. Sad!
Children are products or off-springs of those who raised them unfortunately we are in dire need of God fearing parent! Husbands and wives living out the marraige vows till death do us part, this is the God ordained family. It is obvious that anything less there will be issues look around you. Thanks for the trip down memory land: where I visit often and I loved rock school. Peace!!!
This is beautiful Linda and glad you are feeling better and back on the board. I remember those times of which you so eloguently speak and look back on them with nothing but fond memories. We were poor but we had love...
Hugs

Oh Linda you just took me back to my childhood days when we knew it was safe to play outside and we all knew how to have fun, we also knew respect was at the top of the rules or a spanking took over our hides. great write and fantastic memories. I am sorry to hear that you weren't well and I am really glad to see you are back. take care because we here on the Den do care about you.
I'm so glad you're back! I didn't know you were in the hospital, but am glad you're feeling much better now.
A very warm and hearty write about the much simpler days that has gone by. I think the feeling in this speaks for many. Those much simpler days are so much more healthier for everyone.
Now the videos games are keeping most of the kids indoors. A good form of baby-sitting service, for you always know where your kids are, but the activities aren't healthy at all. The games are very addictive.
A thought-provoking and well informed piece with fond memories.
First of all, welcome home. Ick - hospitals. Glad you're feeling better!
Second, you invoke memories of the good ole days - sigh. Can't bring 'em back, but you did here, in these comforting lines - thank you. :) Saving this, to remember what it was like - back then - well done.
The Wholly Book of Exodus is humorous adult literature that features adult language, situations and content. It is the companion book of Jay Dubya's The Wholly Book of Genesis that satires the entire first book of the Bible.
