Don't look so sad when you look at me
Don't back away hoping I won't see
I'm just like you except I can't walk
I breathe, I cry, I hurt, I talk
Don't look at me with horror are fear
I don't want to see a glimmer of a tear
I'm just like you, I dream, I bleed
I'm learning to be strong, to succeed
Don't look at me with pity on your face
In and instant you could be in my place
I can smile, I play, I laugh and sing
In my heart I can do most anything
Being handicapped starts in your mind
I'm sure you don't mean to be unkind
People pass by me, stop and stare
Whisper and giggle like I'm not there
I try to smile and keep hanging on
But sometimes my faith in life is gone
Why can't people just understand
I do what they do, I just can't stand
I read, I eat, I pray , I hope
I learn, I laugh, I dream, I cope
I do all these things just like you
You look down on me while I love you
I'm different , but in ways like you
You're walking away, what did I do?
There's nothing more heartbreaking than a handicapped ' special ' child set apart by his
peers and left alone and hurting. (((( Huggggs))))
to them all and LOVE.

How true, how true! Everyone, especially children, need to know that it's okay and they are only wanting to be treated like everyone else. I loved this, absolutely loved it. ::smiles:: jh
THIS IS OUTSTANDING. If you have a chance

Linda, your compassion and passionate work inspires. A mentor said to me when I was having health problems, that "if you can function according to your own needs, you are in good health." Wise words, and helps us to look beyond what we can't do, and to concentrate on what we can do. It's hard to see children suffer so. You enhance everyone's awareness with your work.
so glad you reposted this poem, linda; this is probably among my very favorites of the ones you have done; as a handicapped person, i know how people tend to treat me because i walk on a crutch and limp, and i know of the stares and comments directed at me. still, i try to go on, and i try to do my job to the best of my ability; and i have proven to be a very good and dedicated worker at my job, which i have been at for 3 1/2 years now. i work at golden corral, and i roll silverware. i love my job, and i am very grateful to be working, even though my job is not the greatest and don't get paid what i should. (((HUGS))) and love, your friend, karen lynn in texas. :D
Wow Linda.
You know I work for Cerebral Palsey of NJ.
I live these feelings every day, putting the focus on abilities, not disabilities.
You really put it all into words.
You angel you.
