Thank you Michael for taking me back down memory lane. I do wish to tell my readers this is all true ...but it happened many years ago. The joy and the pain of growing up is still fresh in my mind and heart. Thank you all for reading and leaving your kind comments. ((( Huggs))) and Love to all!

Poem Artwork

I am...

Starting school at six years old
Watching Mama walk away
Staying to myself and crying
Most of the day
Summers playing hop skotch
With siblings and friends
Mama calling us in to supper
At the days end

I am...

Daddy taking out the old freezer
For homemade ice cream
Mama mixing the ingredients
We worked as a team
We took turns cranking
Until our arms were sore
Daddy took over when we couldn't
Do it anymore

I am...

Helping mama can from the
Garden Daddy grew
Sting beans and corn
They made a good stew
Mama had canned tomatoes
Lined up in a row
She worked her fingers to the bone
But never let it show

I am...

One of the happy faces
Circled around our Christmas tree
I took so much for granted then
Some things a child don't see
We never had alot of money
With eight hungry kids to feed
But somehow Mama and Daddy
Managed to give us what we need.

I am...

A teenager washing clothes
In an wringer washing machine
It groaned and it creaked
I sure hated that thing
Being the oldest child
There was so much to do
Mama got a job working nites
To help get us through

I am...

Sitting in church with my
Bible in my hand
Knowing Jesus walks beside me
That he helps me stand
I'd get up Sunday morning
And hear the church bells ring
I'd walk to church on Sunday
Baptised at sixteen

I am...

Falling in love and marrying
At eighteen years of age
Thinking I knew it all
I just hadn't seen his rage
He went to Viet Nam
Leaving me and his newborn son
I found that life can be hard
When all is said and done

I am...

Sound asleep on a cold rainy
October night
Loud knocks on the door
It gave me such a fright
My sis looks at me crying
Saying our Mama is dead
Killed by a hit-run driver
Her words filled me with dread

I am...

Riding in a hearse
Not believing that she's gone
Holding my baby son
Yet feeling so alone
Worrying of my brothers and sisters
What will they have to face
Looking into the heavens
I prayed for saving grace

you did a great job Linda, this read and flowed very well. I remember the homemade ice cream, turning the crank like crazy. Being impatient for the goodies to get ready. ml G

Linda, as I was reading your poem, "I Am", I felt every emotion and saw every memory in my mind as I was growing up so many years ago. We have all experienced some of what you've written so beautifully about, and the amazing thing is that it continues to make us grow and it gives us the tools to see the positive, beautiful things in our lives. Thank you for this, it is an exceptional poem from an exceptional lady. Warmly, jh
