 Goodnight Sweetheart

Holding your picture I look down at my hands

Old, wrinkled, spotted and dry

And I wish that you were here to hold them

Instead, I stand here another night and cry

Damn, it’s been over sixty long years

Alone I raised our little towheaded boy

He knew you only from my tales and your picture

But he knew that he brought you great joy

Every night I would fight back the tears

As I tucked him in and looked at his face...your face

Do you honestly know how hard it was

To watch my womanhood fade beneath black lace

I could always feel your touch and your presence

But I longed to hold you near in every way

I can feel you kissing the tears from my cheeks

But so sadly and long ago, the war took you away

You are my husband, my love, my hero

But without you here, my world has been in shatters

And even after all these long and lonely years

Knowing I will be with you soon, is all that matters

A wonderful write about strong love and terrible heartbreaking loss. Having almost been there and being 'saved' by just about a miracle, it is very touching to us. A very beautiful written piece!

A sad but touching tribute to our veterans who have given their lives so others may live without tyranny. Many women and men have had to live and bring up their children without the help of their soulmates. It does make me cry and makes me angry too, that we have to have wars. I wish we could all just get along, and accept that others live differently and have different political and religious views. Good write sis, and thanx for sharing.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

Such a tender, touching write Sherry. I am reminded of a wedding I attended just prior to Christmas...two young people fresh from college, so quick to marry as the groom was soon to be deployed to Iraq. Do you think they were old enough to understand...their love so new, marriage so hasty? Do they stop and think that there may never be a toe headded boy to kiss...memories they may never have the chance to make? I'm not a pessimistic thinker...just one who hopes that there will be a time for them, for life to be lived and memories to be made.
This memory has touched my heart.

This is a very touching poem, Sherry. Beautiful. I went to the Memorial Day parade in my town. Seeing the older vets sent me into contemplation of freedom.

Thanks for your comment too. :-) ~~Nordette

Oh how lovely, and sad...the circle of life so simply and elegantly stated in a few short verses...the ultimate sacrifice affects so many. May we never forget to express our gratitude to those who have endured so much for our freedom. A beautiful write Sherry. Michelle

This is one of those writes that penetrates right into the core. Life seems so unfair at times. How many women have made the ultimate sacrifice and had to bring up their children alone? I pray that all these women and those who gave up their sons are honoured on this day.
Great write.

From such a painful and personal corner, you've given us the essence of rememberance for a Memorial Day. It reads tearfully, but how else should we approach an unapproachable day for recalling our time with a husband, son, father, or whatever he or she was before giving life, itself, to defend our way of life, and our families?
Thank you, warm hearted woman. - Bill

Has the endurance of "Titanic", Sherry, knowing that "her heart will go on" albeit shrouded sixty long years in pain. It's the music that so aptly suits your words, I think. A personal tribute that is universal in the emotions it stirs and unilaterally convincing. Can see this couple smooching along together to this tune again, though! :)) Bless you AND them! Thank you.
