'the Black Knight took it to a higher level . . .'

Poem Artwork

Two armored combatants on Renaissance Day

Year of our lord 2009 – crowds watched as men

dressed in medieval suits of metal riding on steeds

carrying lances approached from either direction.

The Black Knight won this jousting event over

and over again – was a big hit with spectators

but not with the tilters who had their honors

tarnished, just like a rusting suit of armor.

Then the contest took on a whole new air when

the Black Knight took it to a higher level – out

came the mace and bashed in another knight’s

helmet and face; and ran his lance through an arm.

Would-be contender after would-be contender

lost – all winding-up in a heap of metal on the

ground; it looked more like a scrap-yard than a

medieval faire; this had to stop.

Numerous knights decided to take on the Jouster

all at once – out came his broadsword and inflicted

bodily damage; that’s when sheriff’s deputies intervened

A barrage of bullets were deflected by the Knight’s shield.

But then a few hit their mark; there he lay, seemed to be

no functioning movement – one deputy opened-up the

Jouster’s helmet; nobody was there; an authority on

medieval times said the suit of armor was from 1199.

Without any warning, the Black Knight got up and

mounted his medieval horse, also a ghost from the past

Both headed straight for the horrified crowd; he grabbed

a woman dressed as a fair maiden – none were ever seen again.

The challenge and the challenger, then a battle of wills, but it sounds like the Black Knight still got his damsel, absolutely fantastic writing...

Lance,
Wonderfully creative approach to present-day struggles and conflicts, the battle of wills and ideologies eloquently and subtly handled. Very fine indeed.
