Believing

The thing is,
I don’t want to love you,
I don’t want to feel anything,
That is the worst thing about loving you,

I have been in love once,
It was enough to last a lifetime,
I burned my heart to ashes,
And I bear the scars to prove it.

I don’t need new ones,
On tender skin,
Still raw and sore,
From old wounds…

I made peace with my loss,
Stood strong in a garden of such beauty,
Listening to the earth sing,
Watching life move on around me…

Then I heard you crying,
Outside my garden walls,
I tried to ignore you,
Tried to walk away,
Not needing a friend,
And certainly,
Not a lover…

But I couldn’t.

Something in your voice touched my heart,
Cracked the stone and made it bleed,
You seeped between the cracks,
And entered my life…

God what a feeling!

I tried to patch it,
I tried to chip you away,
But you stayed.

That is the best thing about you,
You couldn’t be chased away,
By my anger and bitter words,
By my lack of trust,
At the love you gave me…

The love I wouldn’t let you see.

The best thing about loving you,
Is smiling again,
Is laughing and hearing a sound,
I never thought I would make again,

Is seeing you smile,
And knowing that smile,
Is for me…

The best thing about loving you,
Is the light you brought into my life,
It is knowing that somewhere in the world,
You wait for me to accept the fact,

That I love you too…

If I could change one thing about you,
It would be your past,
And mine too…

I wish that I was the first one,
To tell you that you were loved,
And I wish you were my first too…

Then the heartache we suffered,
Would not exist,
And I could believe in the love you offer,
So freely from your heart,
And you could believe me too…

That old clock can never be turned back, but it can be wound up again, love and pain seem to be best friends, wish they would divorce, or can they?

Beautiful Reindeer.
What a precious heart you have.
I wish having such hearts would not so often be a liability.
I am suspecting poets love and believe because we just don't have an "Off" switch anywhere.
Best wishes.

Aw, that old scourge, the past. Why is it that demon past bears its nasty, sharp teeth at the most inopportune time? Say, when making love and you/he wonders if their partner has ever done this particular act with anyone else, and the answer is, probably, which in turn hurts you because it is so special you just don't see how it could possibly have been done with someone else. That is the spark which carries over to other nit-picking until soon you wonder why you allowed this person in your life, never mind in your bed. Ooops! Got a bit carried away here, Reindeer.
