It’s strange to think of,
What might had been,
Had you never loved another,
I wonder if it would have ended differently,
Had I gotten to you before your heart was tainted,
By lies and cruel deceit…
How sad that life wounds us,
Leaves us bloody wounds that never heal,
Taints our hearts with mistrust,
And cruel doubts that never leave-
I wonder sometimes,
What it must be like,
To be the first love of someone;
So that when your life is a desert,
Of broken dreams,
When all you have seems so far away,
You can look up to see your love,
That stands between you and stark reality,
Like a blood red rose blooming in the winter snow.
It’s hard to say,
What might have been,
Had you never loved another,
Perhaps we could have shared a dream,
Shared Life and love,
Traveled through this world,
With beauty at our fingertips,
With love a heartbeat away…
It’s funny how life goes on,
How birds still fly,
And the sky still turns blue,
It’s funny that I have to try so hard,
Not to think of you…
You call me now and then,
But I can’t think of a single word to say,
There is nothing in this world,
That can stay the day,
Nothing you can do,
Will bring me back to you…
I really enjoyed this one Retta, probably more so because of my mood at the moment.
But as you say, life goes on although a shade of the love will always remain.
best
Ian
i like how the poem turns at - its funny how life goes on, it gave the poem that sense of distance & estrangement which gets us all one time or other even if not in exactly the same context saludos robin

It's easy to see that your writing comes straight from the heart Reindeer and that's why your poetry is always so beautiful.
What longing and regret, Rhetta...I envy those who can maintain a connection to former loves. It seems that when a door has closed to love in my life, it has shut permanently. I would thrill to a phone call from someone I love. I say that in present tense, as the love remains and never dies in my heart. Each person holds precious memories. We are blessed to be loved, however long and well. We should cling to the joy and forget the pain. This write illustrates why...
This is so tumultuous, Retta, like the beauty and the brooding of the beautiful photograph. How sad that the "perfect" love offered, like that of the bleeding and yielded winter rose, should be ultimately tainted or rejected because of past unresolved melancholy, pain and damaged thinking and feeling. This is one of the most gripping and touching writes that I have read on the subject; no self absoption or bitterness... only the unrequitedness that is yet unable to quench the mighty waters of unconditional love. Absolutely awesome, Retta, thank you. Kate xx

this poem left my heart aching, which means it really did its job. your words express all that resonates in a heart that wonders what might have been. superbly written!
Sad, heartbreaking subject. You have written it so well! If only we could let go of the past, of all the hurt and pain and trust completely with a new love and live for today and the future. Life's cruel lessons stay with some and ruin their chance for happiness. Superb composition! Thanks for sharing.
Your poem is tha most complete and interesting, "Good-bye," I've ever encountered. How lovingly bitter-sweet and speculative! Your choice of words and their arrangements leave me in awe. -Bill

Sometimes you can't rekindle what has been. Lovely sade write.
This is an excellent write of what "could have beens" and the fine, thin line that stands in the way and once crossed, brings us all to these very thoughts that you perfectly penned here.
I agree with Regis, Reindeer! You have struck a chord that
goes deep into all of our beings. I can't help but wonder

This is so often the case in this life, Retta. You express a universal theme in this moving write. Thank you for sharing this poetic offering. Love and peace to you. Regis
This is such a heart-crushing write, Reindeer. When we love someone so much and they go away, though we hurt and we long for them, the freedom and innocence that we once shared with them is forever gone. How do we speak to someone who still fills our heart even though they have cast our love aside? I recall my first love; it was so wonderful to be in that place having never known the hurt that another can cause when we allow ourselves to be so vulnerable. I wonder if it is possible to ever trust that much again? You did a wonderful job on this, Reindeer, though the story is so very sad.
Take care,
Sherry
