The Engineer and Love



His mind is precise,
Narrow and fine,
His ideas on life,
Precisely defined…

Then she comes,
This woman of the earth,
And he can’t understand,
A thing she does…

When he asks her to explain,
All she says is “because…”
This is how I feel today,
This is why I can not stay!

Then she runs away,
Leaving him so confused,
What should he do?
His heart is wild and torn,
With a feeling that is so foreign…


Why won’t his equations,
Fit into the neat little squares
On his grafting paper?
What is he suppose to do,
When he has a remainder of two?

He says;
“I can’t stand the fluctuations…
Love is a constant-“
But he has forgotten
The J-operator,
Thrown in to confuse the issue,
Forgotten, women are not tools,
Or numbers that can be used-

The numbers add up,
But he can’t find a way
To factor in the
Fluctuations,
They don’t fit,
They don’t make sense…
How can his heart want
What his mind does not understand?

He is mute at last,
Torn between two worlds,
One neat and tidy,
With all the rules laid out,
A timetable so carefully planned-
How can she so callously
Stop and smell the wild rose?
Or stare so long at the sunset?
It makes them late for
Everything!

He tears his hair,
He throws away the paper
With neat little figures on it,
The tallies are all wrong again,
What is the equation for friend?

This engineer,
This man with a fine mind,
Will never understand our kind,
Today I am wild with the storm,
Tomorrow I may feel the ebb of the tide,
It is something he can’t abide!

Yet he must,
Learn to trust,
That in the end,
Love is not something
You need to defend…

Just lay down baby,
Let me curl your hair
In my fingers,
Touch your sweet lips
With my own,
Lay my hand upon your chest,
And feel your beating heart…

Put your calculator away,
Enjoy me today,
I am here waiting for you,
To show you what love can do…
