The Mountain Calls Me Home...

The mountain,
Cast her shadow,
Spreading soft darkness,
All around me,
And I can’t always see,
You standing there,
Waiting for me…

She calls to me,
Through the memories
Of my ancestors,
Who hunted and played
Among her lovely beauty,
And she kept them safe,
As she now keeps me,
Safe from all,
But you…

I try to go to her,
But you are here,
Calling me too,
And I don’t know
What to do…

I sense your fear,
That I shall not return,
How right you are!
How far the distance seems
When you are here…

When you are near,
All I want is to be here,
Feel you holding me safe
In your strong arms,
Whispering in my ear;

“Babe,
I love you,
Never leave,
Never leave me here,
I cannot live without
You standing by my side…”

How much your words
Cause me fear!
I love you,
Yet tremble when you are near,
Can’t help but feel
I am in a dream,

This must be a dream,
To love and be loved,
Is never real!

Yet I touch you,
And feel,
Your heart beating,
Your warm breath on my face,
Feel so safe in your embrace…

Yet always…
I hear her calling,
So gently calling,
Telling me it is time
To come home…

And you whisper;

“Not yet,
Baby, don’t leave me,
I love you,
I love to see your smile,
Stay with me,
Never leave…

And I wonder,
Who to believe…

Isn't it amazing what power the land holds on us. For me it is the tree covered hills of NY. But with luck your heart will find the right path for you. Beautifully written, my dear.

Hi Reindeer
That which confuses love with need finds me no matter how far I go into the wilderness. Perhaps the wilderness at heart will come to you if your love finds the "self" equally with you; maybe the best of both worlds is possible. Vicky

Past pain makes one tenuous in grasping for new love, yet the longing is all the more intense for that. Great write, Retta.
