Your Birthday Gift to Me

A birthday is a remembrance and a celebration
Of the day, time, and place when you arrived in this world
To begin a journey to places unknown but to heaven;
It took courage because you came from a place of tranquility and safety
Where you could not be harmed and justice prevailed everywhere;
Now pain and temptation and tyranny lurk openly and in the shadows
But you know you must go out and meet them with only your will to guide you;
Sickness disease wounds and deceit pounce without care
And through it all you must find your mission, your purpose, your goal;
That is not the stuff of Hallmark cards or of superstition
It is cold, hard, reality and it doesn’t care how ill-prepared you are.

But then our paths crossed and formed a junction—softly at first
Until one day I looked at you and saw something very special
It was as if we had known each other somewhere that feeling some call déjà vu
And I trusted it because I trust you;
Now I do not need explanations about who you are because I know what you are
And it satisfies my soul;
You are my shining star, my will to live, my alpha and my omega
Oh I have known you for a very long time
When we were young and when we were old
When we were strong and happy without cares or fears.

Now my heart aches at the thought of being separated from you
Even though I know we can never be truly separated
Because love is eternal and once committed to it
There is no obstacle that can deny it
Now or forever.

And so I send you my love on this anniversary of your birthday not only for today
But for always.
