Sometimes sadness seems unavoidable and unfortunately, this poem is based on a real event. The image is symbolic and not the real person. I respectfully thank you for your thoughts on this one.

In Her Sunday Best

There she is in her Sunday best
blue dress
she said she was saving for
a
special day
At last she's wearing it
though she did not put it on
herself
They've closed her blue eyes
blue like the dress
she never wore
blue like the sea
she never saw
Sleeping there
in her velvet-lined skiff
She will float away
across the bright gravestones
like whitecaps
in the sun of August
towards the infinite sea
of the sky

How many times have I felt this way?
Friends of mine, gone too young.

It makes me think of one in particular, a girl passed away on Labor Day Weekend, two days before her first day of Senior Year. At her funeral, she had a new haircut and fresh "back-to-school" clothes on, she was nearly unrecognizable, but that's how she hoped we would see her, all dressed up and ready to start a fresh year.

I feel thankful that she got to show off her new look, but it is an awful occasion to do so, as you understand.

Best wishes, I know this is an older poem, but "the scars remind us that the past is real."

Dramatically sad... however beautifully done! My daughter's best friend had a sister who died on her prom night a few weeks ago in a car accident... she was just 16. She looked so beautiful and was buried in her blue prom dress... This piece literally brought tears to my eyes. Well done, my friend!

This is Beautiful and sad but still brings the light to end the darkness. "The infinite sea of the sky" A poem of your heart, So Beautiful It brings tears to my eyes and a lump in my heart.
I'm so truly sorry I know to who this was written. A Very Special Woman. Always in your Heart. Always By your Side. Always Remember That. and be careful and don't step on her toes!! : )
and too remember as hard as it is at times the only tears they want you to shed are the tears you two shed together. She doesn't want you sad She's there to live fully, completly, happy and painless, and you do the same here on Earth. That's what she wants!
life only comes but once so Live it Fully while your here with us.
We need you to smile You have a really nice warm smile. \________/
and a heart of gold that just shines! : )
All my Love,
Tracey xoox

This is sad, true, and yet I detect a hint of maybe a new hope, an advent of faith that there IS some unfathomable "bigger picture" that we skirt around in this material life...? Sorry, Regis, if I am missing the mark by a mile here and misinterpreting a genuine outpouring of pain and regret. I hope you will "know" me well enough to understand that I would never seek to belittle your feelings, but this is what I seem to be picking up here... the fact that this Precious One is dressed "In Her Sunday Best" gives me the notion that she was not without belief in another life, in another dimension. I've read this again and I still detect this optimism and release into REAL life which is yet to be enjoyed. And it seems to me that maybe, her vibrant faith and the way she "appears" in her beautiful blue dress - even in death - has quickened perhaps this faith in you, too?! I know I am taking a huge risk in saying these things - and could be so wildly wrong!! - but I believe that you are genuine in asking for people's response and I have to say that this is mine. Tragedy strikes in this life, yes, and none is immune; but faith is a wonderful thing, especially for those who truly believe that the "Big Picture" really does exist and that we slip seamlessly from one into the other. Faith denies the grave and makes all things beautiful in its way. To me, this amazing write is personal in its sadness, and yet objective in the "new" revelations it is experiencing through it. I truly think that hope is here... and, of course, lots of love!! This melts me, Regis. Thank you. Forgive me, Buddy, if I AM way off here, OK?! Kate xx

Sad but beautiful poem.
It reminds me of my mother's passing in 1985. Mom's favorite color was blue so we bought a special blue dress for her as she'd been an invalid 23 years and not worn a dress (nightgowns and p.j.'s only).
My sincere sympathy is yours. Writing helps ...

This piece of work reflects the sadness and anger, both brought about by the tragedy of a sudden, or unexpected death of a young person. And I can't help but hold you in my highest respect because more than ever, and despite your personal knowlede, your 'face' was not in the work.

You said: "unfortunately, this is not fiction". I know it hurts. And I know that's hard to do when such tragedy is personal. But what you've done here shows the true sign of a writer.

I respect you, because it is NOT a cry for pity. You've taken a personal tragedy, and created a timeless piece of work by which the reader can certainly relate to the loss, the anger, and the unjustice of it. I respect your bravary to express your feelings in such a universal manner.

And if I knew you personally, I'd probably hug you. But relating to this piece of work, all I can say is: I respect you, Poet.

Carmen :-)
