Sometimes, an insult is not...

Poem Artwork

Labeled

The more time goes by
The less affinity I seem to have
With those I thought I knew
Of late
I have been called
Idiot
Fool
Obsessive
Compulsive
Irresponsible
Immature
Indecisive
Needy
And so much more
But when someone called me
A child
A slice of sun
Slit the fabric of ebon clouds
And in my soul
Was born
A rainbow

Take care of you!

Wonderful, and truthful reflection. One can own labels, but not a child's soul. In fact, children seem to experience their world in a completely fresh (wonderful, or terribly hurting-traumatizing way, because they have no mental labels attached yet. Developping some sort of labels, however, helps us to survive in a complex, and stressful world. Thanks for this treat, my friend. Franz

Being called a child is indeed a compliment. The younger one is, the more innocent. People learn to be cruel and meanspirited--they're certainly not born that way. When I grow up, I still want to be a little kid. Love your attitude!

I'm so glad that mere words do not define us. I'm also glad that our Higher Power has the first and final say. Writing is a great way to get it off you at the same time help others who may not be as strong. Remember, those who truly know you like and love your essence. This is another of your great writes with feeling.

Words can hurt, but the ending is the kicker. The ending reminds us that there is beauty. The ending lifts you up and inspires you. There are ways to praise a child or person, and your ending is an exceptional way to do that.

Dear Regis,

Isn't it amazing that often those whom you thought were your friends are actually the ones who tend to turn on you, when you have found happiness. If by calling you a child has made you happy, then someone has succeded in making your day, this is all that matters. Great write Regis.

Name-calling is like pointing a finger and having the three left on that hand pointing back to the person who's doing all the shouting! On the other hand, if people are merely expressing an opinion, then they are, I suppose entitled to it. All depends on context, doesn't it? I guess we can all exhibit these traits to a greater or lesser extent at times, and what's wrong with them if they are exhibited in the pursuit of genuine integrity and a consuming passion?! Who wants to a bland conformist anyway - they're not the ones who ever achieve anything or leave anything of any lasting value for anyone else either. Goodness me, we each have a unique gift of life so why squander it on merely occupying valuable space and not rocking any boats!! All of these so called "labels" can be positives when channelled correctly. But CHILD is the best; so much potential, so much faith, hope and optimism - trust and lack of cynicism, too. To be called a child is the truth, for so we are. And many of us have never grown up... not in the way that the world expects, anyway. And for me, I think that that can be a far more mature route - not to acquiesce to the accepted norms of being adult with all the garbage and superficiality that goes with it. Stay a child, Regis, and hold on to your licence to freedom of speech and thought! Go you! You have certainly planted a rainbow in my soul with this write, thank you. I'm with you on this one... Kate xx

Hi Regis:

What a wonderful poem. You had taken my mind from the worst to the best in this poem. The first half of the poem was like heavy metal music, while, the latter half was like a warm lullaby for a child. The contrast was amazing. I love this indeed!

Yes...I agree Regis, how wise you are to see it,I too have been called 'child' and 'childish' and luckily I have loved that so called insult.
If only we were all more like children and less like so called mature folk the world would definately be in a lot less trouble that it is right now.
I never really want to stop being a child at heart.
God bless you always fro this gem of a poem and always be you,you are a nice person and top poet.(Well...that's just my childish opinion, anyway!)

Excellent message, Regis...name-calling used to be a sport for school kids and it was cruel...now labelling according to modern psychology is a sport for pseudo informed adults...and it is cruel as well.

I second Robert's remark but would add...one must have a good sense of humor and deal with those people one thought one knew...or send them packing and find the right ones.
