Life and a Love

We were children
You made such
A first impression
Your eyes said much
Had such expression
Without a word spoken
I felt such a connection
I would have taken you
As a knight or a prince would do
To some place magical and yet real
It was so compelling in my soul
For you had sown love there

Then
It was not for us to be together
Not my choice
But life and parents and decisions

It is oddly wonderful after all this time
I remember you as you were
As I know you still are

Life and circumstances
They dictate the way things are
But they do not necessarily dictate much else
Certainly not the future

I choose to hang on to the hope
That I will get a chance
To be your knight or your prince
Or just plain old me
Which you will find is not plain at all

That is my love
That is what I offer you

Nice heartfelt reminisce, good flowing poem. Punctuation in prose and poetry have different rules ...l I think I need to go with the 'flow' too sometimes. Kenny

Wonderful poem, Regis. I think our first love remains with us forever, even though it is rarely the one we end up with in a lifetime commitment. First love is so powerful, so emotional that I don't think we could stand a lifetime of it. Yet how wonderful if we could.

A very lovely, authentic bridge between childhood and maturity, which proves that time only consolidates what is there. Love and the heart of a child never die. A lovely response by Jena Ayro as well.

I looked at childhood infatuations and just that and left them behind. She must be some one very special for you too long for her even now. And I do hope that she reads your poem and comes to your rescue.

The sacred and the mythic do mingle within the ordinary, yes, this is lovely, and at the end uncovering the core you already are! You are the knight and prince because you love her. That's all anyone can ask for.
Blessings,
Christine

A lovely poem, Regis, but it makes me wonder ~ Are you really pining for a childhood love after all this time? or is this a work of fiction that might someday be written into a story where dreams come true? Perhaps love and satisfaction are waiting somewhere else, and can be found in seeking answers from God?
Sincerely,
Connie

Dear brother Regis. Your poem has such deep meaning but I am very concerned about you. Your poem has prompted me to write a poem dedicated to you. Peace be with you brotherly love and blessing. May a whole new door open up to you this Memorial Day. amen.

Regis, the words of your poem sound simple but...have notably touched the deeper aspect of human nature...the concept of the self...and the mind...two soul-mates separated by life's circumstance but not by the authentic-pure-lasting and sensitive emotions that this platonic nature of human relationship has to offer...There are some more of self-confessed Platonists contemplating a love as a desire for eternal beauty...a quality that transcends reality...of which the world we experience is only a very small part...Beautifully written.

Regis, I know the agony our souls go through and the pain our hearts suffer under these conditions. There is no greater agony to be experienced. I am currently living much of this human tragedy. May love and peace be with you. Jon Michael
