The narrative exchanges between Hunter and his mother at a picnic, the youngster’s fable-like conversations with a squirrel and rabbit, and the book’s expressive illustrations reinforce Hunter’s dilemma.

Suffering the pangs of a guilty conscience for knocking his mother’s porcelain doll off a table from throwing and catching a ball in the house, something he shouldn’t be doing—Hunter avoids telling the truth in the aftermath of breaking it. His anguish is apparent throughout his outdoor venture.
