It was once arguable that flesh and bone could combat the science of survival with weapons to defeat the intellect of technology, but…well, that was yesterday. We’ve been disintegrating our rational logic for a very long time. Fess up. In the future, organ engineering might not involve animals at all. Researchers are in the early stages of exploring how to engineer complex tissue from the ground up. Some are 3D-printing scaffolds in the shape of lungs. A body once was
The human vehicle,
That transport enabling
A stay on this planet.
No matter the size,
Shape,
Skin tone,
Or health,
It was always short of the possessor’s
Sense of beautiful.
It was too slow,
Wouldn’t last for that day coming,
Needing sleep,
Food,
Care and touching.
Oh, the touching.
The body hated mirrors,
Where eyebrows furrowed
Over blue eyes unsatisfied,
Coveting brown, green or hazel,
The pre-designer obsession.
Reflections pierced its psyche,
Where once stalwart bones
Became unforgivable betrayals
Of aging hearts,
Liver,
Kidney,
And libido.
Thus, the revolution.
So long ago, that was.

For now the body,
Still of flesh and bone,
Is about to strut its designer label about,
Its A-I brain of infinite power,
Its muscles able to leap buildings
In less than a single bound,
Its beauty always
In the digital eyes of the beholder
Just as Time’s virtual reality allows.

Every hundred years.
And so…

Body future
Body alive
Body manufactured
Body once of love
Body now of digital obedience.
Survival was never an option,
Save stubbornness of spiritual zealots,
Those holders of yesterday,
Unknowing it was but mulch for tomorrow.
Body facts succumbed.
Body fiction became historical.
Body future now an oxymoron in progress.
Such is tomorrow’s mental landscape of zeros and ones.
And some think it’s stoppable?

Bodybuilding at its finest. But with drugs and enhancements, will the brain keep up? I applaud your efforts to make those of us with disabilities more able, but I find the human body a perfect place that should be preserved like evolution has created, rather than modified to meet the needs of the mirror and prolong the life of the wealthy who, in their youth did not take care of their bodies.
These new hearing aids are a blessing and a curse. They need to be a lot better before I would have them implanted permanently. Stem cells for reversing spinal cord injury, like Christopher Reeve advocated for, so far has not come to pass, but it may in the future, after both he and I are dead.
