Coming full circle back to Gettysburg

Here I am at age 13, in full Boy Scout khaki, carefully studying battlefield maps at Gettysburg. I’d like to say I knew then I’d spend much of my life digging into overlooked corners of American history—but honestly, I was just trying to figure out where the cannonballs landed.

Fast forward to today, and I’m knee-deep in a new book. I won’t reveal the title just yet, but let’s just say it involves the Battle of Westminster—a short, fierce clash just days before Gettysburg. Some say it barely mattered. Others argue it delayed JEB Stuart’s cavalry long enough to tilt the course of the larger fight.

It’s a story worth looking at closely.

I was a Boy Scout, too. With my new spin cast rod and reel at 13, I was interested in charting rivers. At the back of my family's old homestead, I caught my first big, and biggest, fish ever. A 31.5 inch musky weighing 7.5 pounds.

When I lived in West Virginia looking down on the Cheat River crossing of George Washington, I recall driving through Gettysburg more than once on my way to my brother's place in Fort Washington. But I never had time to stop and look around.
