A sad week at Low Arvie 10/11/2010 2:48:30 PM
We have not had a very nice week here at Low Arvie. first of all last Tuesday, Richard went out early in the morning to find that Lady Bonnie had calved during the night and was lying dead in the field. He couldn't find her calf at first, and we feared that would be dead too. However, he eventually found her alive and well over the other side of the field. He brought her into the shed and we are bottle feeding her. She is a big calf and that must have been the problem, although Bonnie was only four years old and this was her second calf. We have called the calf Lady Bella. Bonnie was Beauty's daughter and so Bella is her grand daughter. Because we are having to hand rear her, she will be just as tame as Beauty, and may come to lead the pack too, in time. She is very greedy and empties her two litres of milk in about ten seconds flat! She is living in the old shed with the big boys (two year old bullocks) and goes out with them into the paddock during the day. They seem to like her and she runs round happily amongst them. At first they were very curious and crowded around her, but they are so gentle and quiet and she was never in any danger.
Then on Thursday I received the news that my cousin's husband had lost his battle with cancer, just five days short of his 66th birthday and a year after being diagnosed. He had fought bravely but the cancer was very agressive and the doctors could do little to help him. His wish was to be at home and we managed to get him home just one week earlier. But its very sad.
On a happier note, Morgan brought his father, step mother and step brother (Sam, aged 8) to Low Arvie for a brief visit on Wednesday. We had a lovely time with them and are just sorry that they live so far away (in Flagstaff, Arizona) and we can't see them more often. They loved Low Arvie and spent an hour or two walking round the farm before we all went down to Pringles (pub) in the village for steak pie and chips. One strange thing was the behaviour of David and Henry, our cats. Usually David is very friendly and comes to meet everyone, while we don't see Henry until visitors have left. However, Henry must have American genes as he fell in love with Sam and spent the whole time with him, but David was frightened of him and kept out of the way. Very odd!
