On weather, crisis and life as I know it..... 6/14/2008 5:59:40 AM
I am sitting at a computer...not mine as I write this blog. My house is currently under water...to what degree, I have yet to know...I cannot get close enough to even get a glimpse of the level of devastation in my neighborhood.
I live less than a mile from the river that runs through our fair city of 150,000 people, give or take....it has been a very rainy spring that followed a record snowfall winter and well, the river just couldn't handle it anymore.
I was told to evacuate on Wednesday...now having NEVER been in such a situation and being so far from the river banks...I purely thought that this was a precautionary evacuation. I grabbed enough clothes to last about 5 days, my dog and her food and left my home.
Now. lest you feel sorry for me... I am one of the lucky ones... I have a warm, dry place to stay for as long as I need to...many are far less lucky. Many people are in cramped, less than private makeshift shelters around the city. To make matters worse, much of our water supply has been compromised and now we are on a strict water usage plan. I just heard on the news that we have enough water to last another day...then we will have none for a community of this size, that is devastaing in itself. No drinking, washing clothes, or dishes...no showering or handwashing is allowed...none.
And right now, I am at a standstill, the work has yet to even begin...
Once I am able to get back to my house...I will be able to see the level of devastation and then assess what I need to do from there...
My wonderful home that has symbolized so very much for me... independance, security, a start to a new life...my safe haven in a world that has been tipped on it's head these last few years...and now that is gone too...in just a matter of days.
These are my thoughts on this 14th day of June, 2008.
