For my first book signing this coming Friday, I thought I would bring in some help to take the attention away from me and allow people to approach me without actually having to talk to me. That sounds crazy but I really like the idea. You know how you walk in the mall and there is somebody handing out fliers or standing next to their kiosk begging for your attention. You try not to look at them and focus straight ahead hoping that will make you temporarily invisible and unapproachable. That is the one thing I want to avoid at my first book signing. I don't want to be vying for attention. I find that whole process demeaning. So I had an idea which will make it easier for me.. at least in my mind. I am bringing my Harley-Davidson into the mall and parking it next to my book signing table. This will allow the motorcycle to guide the people closer for a look without me having to do a carnival sales pitch of ... "step right up ladies and gentle men and see the profusely sweating man beg for your attention." Harley Davidsons do have an unusual effect on people. The men who don't have one stop and dream they did. The women who have never rode on a motorcycle stop and wish they could. And those that have motorcycles of any kind stop and look as a comparison to their own bikes. It is the perfect ice breaker and the perfect attention getter. I am just there for the ride... The Harley is showcasing the book. Like Oz, I am just the man behind the curtain. The conversation will eventually lead to the book, but only as an added feature... "and if you buy the book we will include this set of Ginzu knives and not one but two orange juice squeezers.
