Some poems are New Characters I am creating ... Not always me. 1/12/2004 7:27:43 AM
I create poems to capture potential new characters for upcoming books. As a creative way to establish some new characters in my next two books, I have started writing poems on behalf of those characters. Now this may seem crazy to you, but it works for me as I think about my characters and what they are feeling and experiencing in the numerous mini plots in my head. I visit their character flaws, their triumphs and failures of life and simply put that emotion down on paper and create a poem out of it. The poems capture the raw emotions and take into consideration the scenarios behind the characters and what led them to feel that way. This convoluted character capturing allows me to shelve an emotion of a character who I have not yet sat down with and completely created their life history. It is the readers digest version of emotions that I put on the shelf for later consideration that I may or may not pull into the upcoming story lines.
Now here is the strange part. The poems have solicited reviews from many of my Authors Den comrades who think I am going through these experiences myself. NOTE: all poems have nothing to do with me at all, other than I do throw dashes of thought into the characters I am creating. I am currently having the best time of my life. So when you read these poems they are NOT about me, but rather me putting myself into a potential character that I am trying to create from the bottom of their soul and bring to the page with real life emotions.
I offer many apologies to my AD poets and writers who may have thought otherwise. This technique of capturing a character's flaws and exhortations may be unorthodox to some, but it a simple and perfect way for me to take a snapshot in time of a character who just crossed my mind and I have yet to fully develop.
