Someone in Britain seems to think that my books are worth twice the publisher's asking price. The parties involved are Lightning Source UK, and SBW Books.
I was browsing the Alibris site and just for fun, typed in my name. The search revealed that while my books are selling new for $28.95 and $18.95 here in the U.S., it is a different story according to Ingram subsidiary Lightning Source UK. They see no problem with charging anywhere from $44 to $68 for a new copy of one of my books. Am I seeing this right? These are new copies, unsigned, no extras, nothing special about them. Huh?
(Additionally, I'm only getting something like $4 from every book iUniverse sells. What in the depths of Hell gives these UK people the right to cheat not only the consumer, but also me, out of money? If it has something to do with shipping, then I can understand, even if the supposed Ingram publisher/distributor is based in Peterborough UK and appears to have factories over there. But otherwise, I have no clue.)
After some Google-assisted digging on Lightning Source and SBW, I have reached the tentative conclusion that either people in Britain really like my book, or there's some sort of bilking of the public going on over there that I don't know about. Sure, maybe the hardcover of The Seventh Circle is worth $28.95; that's a competitive price for a book that size if you ask me. But upwards of $68? They have to be kidding! Not even Slick Willy Clinton's book is that much in American Buckos. And it's over 900 pages!
Even so, I'm going to take this as a good sign that they are moving the product. It might be overpriced, and I certainly wouldn't want any Britons to be disatisfied with my writing, paying an additional, unnecssary fee as well. I'm just happy to have an outlet over there.
