I'm thinking about another celebrity sighting again.
Although I'm not really sure if I can call this one a celebrity, per se. There are plenty of people out there that would say "Oh yes, he's famous," but he's not really famous in that superstar famous kind of way--not the movie star kind of way, just in his own way. That's good enough for me.
Anyway, the person I'm talking about is a writer by the name of Orson Card. He's a Mormon, from what I hear.
I remember seeing this man here at my school, *not knowing who he was*, and thinking: "Well, that person is special for some reason. I can tell just by looking at him. Mayhap he is a reporter from New York?" That was my first impression. Well, I got a good look at the guy. It was last fall and he was wearing gloves and an overcoat (Why do overcoats scare me so much?) and my second impression of him was that he looked EXACTLY like the Chesire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. If you just replace the whiskers with facial hair, I think the resemblance is rather striking.
Now, seeing that this was last fall and it's now sometime near spring 2005, you're probably wondering why I even remembering seeing this person at all. I have to admit that it was a very brief encounter, and that I didn't recognize him for who he was immediately. (If I had, I might've chosen to approach him. Wouldn't that be embarrassing?) So we're talking about a total of fifteen seconds here. But if you're like me and you have a knack for remembering things, (even stuff you don't want to remember) fifteen seconds is long enough--especially if that person sticks in your head as someone special. (First impressions really do count--oh, by the by, I suck at them. Too timid!)
So I was puttering around on the Internet one day, and I ran across OSC's website, which is Hatrack river. Then I saw his picture. Voila! He looks just like the guy I saw on the steps of Reeve Union on Algoma Blvd. Amazing. Wish I'd realized it at the time. But oh well, there's always tomorrow! (At least I didn't embarrass myself, eh? That's what this website is for.)
Oh, and also, I saw him take paper out of his coat and write on it. Was that about me? Hmm...maybe those weird feelings happen for other people too. (Do other people look at me and say...Aha! There's someone special??? If so, I'd like to know please. Hey, stop hiding from me!!! It happened again today at lunch, some girl looked at me weird. Oh stop...no wait, continue...confused! My brain is running away with me. My brain is running away. My brain is running. My brain...ahhh. Now I have succeeded in convincing you I'm insane. Or was it inane?)
Case in point: a few years ago (like five now) I went to a writer's dinner in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. There I met a Milwaukee author named Elaine Bergstrom. I bought one of her vampire books and for some reason, felt obliged to shake her hand (she sat at my table at the dinner too). Well, I went home and tore through that book (meaning I read it really fast). Lo and behold, she mentioned a special feeling about handshaking in the book. It was written almost a decade before the encounter at the dinner! (Just for reference, the title was "Blood Alone," and it was through ACE.)
