This person doesn't know what she's talking about.
Just a follow up to the previous post about the autobiography.
Babs of Brooklyn referred to my review and said "I believe this book is self-published so contrary to another review I read here, there really is no publisher profiting from this book." (Quoted direclty from Amazon.com review boards)
Ok, first I'd just like to repeat that this is another anonymous person on the net, who could be anyone (are you out there imback5? The mailerdemon said my message to you was undeliverable; it figures.) Therefore I feel compelled to complain here instead of directly to her, which I most certainly would do if she'd put any identifying information online except for "Babs." That doesn't tell me anything.
It's obvious that this "Babs" knows nothing about business.
I ask you, "Babs," and anyone else who might happen across this blog, how should a self-publisher like iUniverse stay in business if it makes no money from the sale of its books? Does "Babs" even know that iUniverse started out as a private company and later Barnes and Noble invested millions to make it better? No, of course she doesn't know these things.
Furthermore, what "Babs" fails to realize is that iUniverse would never have published a book like this, would not be giving it as much attention as it's getting, unless they saw some long term reward (which doesn't necessarily translate to personal rewards for other authors like me). I'd like to point out that, on the iUniverse website, virtually every other iUniverse book but Fisher's is available for sale (you can't get it in iUniverse's bookstore), and also, virtually every book but Fisher's is available for "Browse Before You Buy," such as you would see in a bookstore; these are staples of the iUniverse bookstore site. Check it out yourself, and you'll see what I mean.
On top of that, to add insult to injury, Fisher's 300+ page book is priced below other iUniverse books of similar length, giving her an unfair advantage over other iUniverse titles. Customers are more likely to buy a product that is priced lower than another comparable product; it's just a fact of life. Can you really tell me that if the book were priced at $24.95, that you'd then be more likely to buy it than a similar book from the early 1990s that is priced at $6.95?
So, sorry to say, but "Babs" is wrong. Iuniverse is profiting from the publication of this book, in terms of money as well as a higher profile in the minds of everyday consumers.
Once again, I'd just like to remind people that I haven't read the book, have never read the book, will never read the book, and that my problems are not with the content of the book itself. I think it's great that Fisher has found redemption, and I for one don't want to take that away from her. Redemption is between her and God, not her and the public at large (Why should we be forced to question if she deserves her forgiveness? Ultimately, forgiveness belongs to God.) And there are plenty of other books of advice on how to keep your children out of trouble. This is just sensationalism out of hand all over again. We had a sensational criminal case, the person was convicted and went to jail, paroled, and now has become a sensational recovery story. But in the end, it all goes back to something bad that happened over ten years ago. My problem is that she and the publisher are trying to sell the rest of us on it, and that's my only grudge with this book.
