Sunday night

The curtains have just been drawn on my large living room bay
window as another night begins to fall.The day and night
divided ,compartmented into two distinct entities by the
pulling together of thick velvet curtains. My early
dinner/high tea of steak pie and a strawberry gateaux washed
down by some red wine was most appetising.Of course when you
have one piece of gateaux ,it is difficult not to go back
for another piece and even another. A week ness of mine.
I did not wander far today. The weather,yet again ,was not
very congenial and so I stayed indoors all day.
Last nights Eurovision Song Contest was won by the somewhat
glamerous but bearded Conchita Wurst of Austria with her
bondesque/basseyish big ballad "Rise Like A phoenix".Her
win recieved tumulteous aplause at the stadium in
Copenhagen and gave Austria its first win since Udo Jurgens
Merci Cherie in 1966.There was anger at her win in Russia
and by some sections of Austrian society .Although the
magic of Eurovision saw her get high votes from countries
who had pressed for her expulsion.No doubt the sneering
British press who have scant respect for the contest will
likely dismiss her as a bearded irrellevancy and her song
as rubbish,as they will most likely do with the other
competing songs.This song is far from rubbish it is a
classy ballad that was well sung and performed with
conchitas autobiographical lyrics. The Netherlands came
second with the common linnetts" calm after the storm"
a well recieved country number and only the first Dutch
entry to be placed in the top five for over ten years.
Third was Swedens Sanna Nielsen with the ballad "undo"
fourth was Armenia ,Aram MP3 with "not Alone" the favourite
which I did not rate so highly. fifth was a New Yorker
Andras kalley -Saunders with "Running" for Hungary.It was a
triumph for the ballads and for western europe in general.
The UK, Greece, Italy, Azerbaijan ,all predicted to go far
failed to impress and came much further down the board than
they had expected. France came last.
Politics reared its ugly head and Russia was booed every
time they recieved high votes.It will be interesting to
see if Russia compete next year.Another aspect however in
Eurovisions favour is the fact that in spite of the crisis
in Crimea, Russia and Ukraine still appeared on the same
stage.It is time for the UK to retreat and think about how
they will select their entry next year and perhaps for the
UK to take the contest seriously without sneers and
sniggers and to admit that saturday night showcased an
amazing amount of talented performers ,singers and good
songs
