South Kensington Easter Weekend 4/4/2015 3:13:36 AM
The bright yellow fluffy down of Easter chicks deck the shop
windows of South Kensington. Exclusive sweets shops offer
chocolate eggs of various sizes and descriptions in silvery
cellaphane. The prices assault the wallets of many. The tube
station is bursting at the seems with tourists and Spanish
and Italian dominate over a tower of Babel. They spill
gracelessly onto the wet streets .The gray unwelcoming sky
of an Easter weekend in London high above them. The still
very cold weather of April is encouraged to be happy with
the colours and sentiments of the approaching Easter
day.Children and a fair amount of adults look forward to a
feast of goodies on Sunday.
The solemn ceremonies at the near by Brompton Oratory
remind the passers by of the darker more serious days
preceeding Easter and graven faced women in black mantillas
grace the steps of the grand edifice. Its gloomy, unlit
interior a fitting venue for the passion on Good Friday
where Princess Michael venerates the cross and a homeless
bag lady follows on somewhere in the never ending queue
behind.
Harrods, across the road, lights up at night and keeps vigil
over the area. The grand white terraced town houses of the
well off fall into place behind it .A home to aristocrats
.Who distinguish themselves from the plehbian and the new
well to do by the clothes they wear ...and bright red
trousers with tweeds and red hankies from Harrods make a
statement.
A few miles east the bells of St Paul``s cathedral peel in
joyful celebration. The jubilation resounds through the
streets of the original city. The sunlight hits the dome .It
is Easter Sunday and at last Spring has arrived.Tourists
throng the steps intertwined by local men in smart suits and
ties and young women in fashion hats. They ascend the steps
where ,in the film Mary Poppins, the old lady sang" Feed the
Birds".They are met with magnificence as the gold guilded
pillars ,bright ,white walls and myriad of heavenly mosaics
thatlook down on them in festal triumph.A welcome to the Easter
season which for athiest and believer alike tells a story
of good triumphing over evil.
