A Bank Holiday At Elmwood

A door slams from one of the neighbouring flats as another
unremarkable bank holiday saunters on by ." BANK HOLIDAY"
- only the Brits could conjure up something as boring and
non descript as that .Lie ins , quiet streets and more
often than not bad weather its hallmark.
The stunning array of red and yellow tulips ,daffodils
peppered with pinks and blues of other flowers whose
obscure names I cannot recall rest on the garden here at
Elmwood.A tranquil little enclave just off the ever busy
,oft uncrossable, Halifax Road and my home since 2001 when
I moved here from my student accomodation in the Highfields
area ,where I had stayed at for a good two years after my
student status had ended.Its fine listed buildings now
seedy bedsits and often neglected by landlords.In its once
stately piles of stone and elegant elms stands Elmwood
Avenue a prime example of a once desireable road that had
fallen to rock bottom status.There were tales of murders
comitted within its transient nooks and one victim of the
Yorkshire ripper had once been a tennant of its walls.As
the gentrified moved out the working classes moved in and
when they went off to green pastures drug addicts and
prisoners moved in and the area became far from safe by
night.A nurse friend of mine who had once lodged in its
bedsits swore the converted house she had lived in was
haunted.It remains, from the main road, a most attractive
leafy green area and one would be forgiven of ignorance of
its recent lot.That Elmwood also happens to be the name of
the actual house I live in here in Edgerton is but a
coincidence .It was named after the many gracefull elms
that once shrouded its drive from the street .The elms now
long gone.
It is with regret that the original owners of the house
want to return tolive in it and I have a few months to look
for alternative accomodation.The most attractive house
next door was empty and I could not believe my luck.Today
however I noticed flowers in the windows and bedroom
curtains remained closed.In other words someone else has
got there before me .
