Phantom of the Opera Movie 5/8/2005 11:35:26 AM
I’ve been watching the movie, Phantom of the Opera, for a few days now, at least once a day since I received it. Once in a while I tend to obsess over a movie, constantly thinking about it. It motivates me to write in some way. Last time this happened was with the movies, Beauty and the Beast (French version in black and white), John Carpenter’s Vampire, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Van Helsing, and Underworld.
I thought the Gerard Butler made a fabulous Phantom—dark and mysterious. His movements, his expressions, and his voice that did so resemble that of a Rock singer made it even more enjoyable for me. I truly enjoyed how he sang the song after the first time Emmy removed his mask. I could hear his accent and found it most fitting for that song. Emmy Rossum was magnificent as Christine. I was a bit shocked to hear she was sixteen years old when movie was made. When I heard ‘young’ I just assumed she was in her early twenties. But what do I know.J Still, she has a most beautiful voice. Patrick Wilson, was an outstanding Raoul in my opinion. Great voice—calm, soothing, and lovely. The Phantom’s opposite I’d say. Of course Minnie Driver was fun to watch in her part as Carlotta, and Miranda Richardson put a different spin to Madame Giry, one I enjoyed very much. Another that sticks in my mind was the gentleman who was hung as he was dropped in middle of a performance. Small part but one that stayed in my mind. He was awfully good.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’d be awfully happy if someday I’d be able to write something that would capture someone else’s imagination just like the above has done for me. What a fantasy! But that’s what it’s all about for me at least. Stepping away from reality for a while and allowing the imagination to soar…
