They called it "an event of a life-time." 1/13/2005 6:28:07 AM
An excuse for damage made by the Florida Builders Association after houses were hit by three hurricanes last year. My wife and I are wintering in Orlando, FL this year. We have subscribed to the local newspaper, so we get some of the local perspective on news.
I read with interest a recent analysis of whom to blame for the water seepage damage done to many homes during last year's hurricane season. In many cases water was blown through the walls and under the windows in copious quantities, and with no way to dry things out, the mold and mildew destroyed the interior walls and contents.
The builders are supporting the move to impose higher quality standards for the future, but they say they are not to blame for what happened in the hurricanes. The insurance companies are balking at paying for all the consequential damage, saying the builders should pay for the repairs and replacements. Many homeowners are caught in the middle.
What I found most interesting was the statement that the three hurricanes that crashed through central Florida in six weeks was "an event of a life-time," offered as the excuse for pushing the responsibility onto others. It sounds so much like complaints about having a 500-year flood in California that overflowed the 100-year levees. What blew people's minds was that the next year there was another 500-year flood.
Go figure. That is why we call those members of our society who realize that the world is not constant and it is best to be prepared for the worst, even if it is supposedly 500 years away, Survivors.
