Nursing My Writing Career

For the last few posts, I have been referring to Elizabeth Kubler Ross’ Five Stages of Grief to shed light on how some grandparents raising their children’s children may have felt or are going through, presently.

Ross created the different levels of grief gearing toward the last stages in a dying person. The stages are Denial, Anger Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. But, she concluded these emotions can be applied in any great loss (divorce or income) or any situation where life has been altered. My main focus grandparents plunged into the pool of parenting for the second time.

The example below is oversimplifying how these stages can be applied in everyday life.
Alterations in life can be as simple as what happened to me last week.

6:00 a.m. My alarm clock did not go off.

Denial: I can’t believe the clock didn’t alarm. I’m going to be late for work. Why me?
Anger: This stupid piece of man made technology isn’t worth the time man put in to make it.
Bargaining: Okay God, get me to work on time, I promise to go to bed early every night and wake up 30 minutes early to assure this never happens again.
Depression: I’m doomed. I’m going to lose my job. I won’t be able to pay my rent. I will become homeless.
Acceptance: I’m late. It’s nothing I can do now. I’ll call and let my supervisor know. I’ll stay late and make up my time.

Most do not get to acceptance this quickly, it was broken down to allow you to see how any change can affect your mindset.

Take the stages listed above and apply it to your current situation. Tell me about it.

My next post will be directed toward bargaining.
