Name That Tune

Your mother says, “That’s okay. I’ll sit home alone tonight. Did you hear about the burglaries in my neighborhood?”

There hasn’t been a crime in your mother’s community in ten years, other than Mrs. Chummly’s red striped, black polka dot and leopard skin outfit. But, you think it’s a first time for everything. You respond. “I’ll come over for dinner and watch reruns of the Golden Girls with you. First, I need to cancel my dinner date.”

Your husband remarks: “My black wrinkled pants and my white shirt will be fine for your boss’s dinner. The hole in my white shirt is very small. No one will notice.”

You answer: “I’ll stop by the cleaners and pick up your shirts and your navy suit, before my hair salon appointment and after I drop off the children, at your mother’s house.”

The dry cleaner is across town for you, but minutes away from him. He plays racket ball tonight and that’s his only form of relaxation. After all, it is your boss’ dinner.

"Mom, all the kids have the new Chocolat cell phones,” says your eleven year old son.
You ask, “How much?”
“Only $300.”
“Let’s see what we can do. After, YOU GET A JOB!!!!”
You son begins to cry, “That’s why I will never have any friends.”

Resuming the responsibility of serving others because it bothers your to see them suffer, irregardless of your own feelings, mainly after they have set up a bleak scenario in your mind. You relent. “Let me call my wireless service. It’s time for an upgrade, anyway.”

Guilt is the name of that tune. I added another stage for this project—guilt. Think of the Five Stages of Grief as five layers of a cake, then guilt is the icing.

Where does guilt play in your new found role?

In the beginning, did you feel guilty that you were not totally ecstatic about taking over this new role? Did guilt emerge when you prayed for another solution other than your grandchild moving in with you? Did you feel guilty, because in your heart, you knew you were doing a noble gesture, but you wanted your life the way is was before?

Do you often give in to your grandchild because guilt drowns you because of their parent's absence?

Give me feedback. Any questions, comments, suggestions? I’m open.
